I get it, and would agree if this was something else. I've yet to see anyone explain why THIS scenario as it played out was the best they could come up with if the goal was a ratings push and controversy. Surely there could have been an easier way to gain attention than having a guy who was nominated for an Oscar 30 minutes later assault the host live on air than scream profanities at him they needed to edit live.

You've got to be kidding. Sure nobody cares about watching the oscars really, but when a situation occurs where Will Smith walks on stage and slaps Chris Rock over a joke during a live broadcast, that will garner interest.
I don't watch the oscars, but I found myself looking for the video after I heard about it this morning. Do I care who won awards? No, not at all. But I did want to see the video of the altercation.
