They are marketing them towards moms and families and turning them into luxury SUVs. It's a shame
Not really though. Unless you have 1-2 kids max. It still only seats 5. Most families are all about the third row seating in a vehicle.
As for luxury SUV? Nah...even all the extra options on the wranglers are still basic options you see in other nicer SUVs.

I can't believe destroying some sub $5k vehicles 10 years ago is driving new car prices today but I've been wrong before
Think about how many cars that were in the market suddenly were gone in a short period of time.
Where do you think cars to fill the demand that would have been filled by those older used cars came from? What do you think happened to new car prices as that demand began to be met by new cars backed by cheap financing? What do you think happened to the price of used cars as that set of cars began to skew more toward newer modern cars instead of older cars with more miles and fewer amenities? Do you think the price of new cars ever goes down? How long do you think it'll take for the used car inventories to get back to a similar spread of ages to that you saw before the government artificially got rid of a huge number of affordable cars to protect their investment in GM?
Also, as others have pointed out, the prices you see at the auto show are for the pimped out max option models. Take the Mustang, for example. They're bringing the GT premium with a V8, leather seats, tunable exhaust, 500W 11 speaker entertainment system, navigation system, etc. They're not bringing the 4 cyl Ecoboost with cloth seats and AM/FM stereo with CD player.
EDIT: Well, there are at least 8 dumb motherfrickers here, but it's the OT, so it's to be expected.

What you get in a vehicle today is still a bargain. Technology and efficiency continues to increase, yet you can buy a Nissan Versa for HALF the price of a Model T, adjusted for inflation.

Also trucks don't depreciate 30% in the first

$50K for a 2.0L turbo. That's what a lot of cars are now.

When interest rates rise. People were paying 15-20% in the late 70s and early 80s and it had a profound affect on the industry.

It's luxury for a Wrangler. Wranglers are supposed to be the most basic car you can get. Now it's hard to find a manual base model with no add-ons

I laugh at that shite. Buy a one year old used car for 30% off the price.
This old lame response is funny.
Lets take any car that is priced under $40K new. Find me one that is one year old being sold used and show me a 30% reduction.
And it's worse with trucks. They are all holding value very well.
Now I will say buying a 4 or 5 year old used car has some advantages.

Most people don't care about sticker price, they just want the most they can get per month. Interest rates have been extremely low

Based on what I see, most people seem like they would blow a stranger in an alley to get enough car payment money for what they perceive to be a “nice” car.

Having sold cars, this is close to truth.

I just purchase the most expensive car I've ever owned for $26K and it was painful to do.
I just don't value material things that much. The technology and safety features are unreal compared to the 12 year old jalopy I've been driving though.

Went through that a couple of years ago and it still bothers me.

I would say that is the case for most cars. Manuals are not being sold as much in general. Try going to any dealership and finding any car that is brand new and a manual. Good luck.
I get what you are saying though. But what did you expect when they went to a 4 door version? It opened up another demographic they could sell to.

When people have more money in their pocket prices for goods go up.

As far as I remember, the cars people were giving up for cash for clunkers were shite and wouldn't be on the road much longer anyway. Not like the government was giving 10k for a decent used car.

I went to the Virginia Beach car show a few weeks ago. They had a $55,000 Tacoma there.
