Will Amazon's reviews system be their downfall?

5+ years ago Amazon reviews could be generally counted on for reliable feedback on a product.

Nowadays there are so many fake reviews, especially for "sponsored" products that I've started to avoid anything with hundreds of reviews and a 4.5+ star average, that was released less than a year ago.

These fake reviewed products move to the top of the page and are sometimes even classified as "Amazon recommended".

I can only imagine how difficult it would be for a legit company to gain any traction on Amazon when these fake review products monopolize the page.

If another ecommerce site can figure a better method for the user review system, its an opportunity to compete with Amazon.

The best is on prime day when they offer TVs that only they sell and have 5 star reviews on the same day. That’s some fast shipping

Pretty much anything?

Supplements, food, body wash, shampoo you name it. Search for practically anything and often times the name brand won't be at the top. It'll be an obscure sponsored product released a month ago with 500 five star reviews, some even so obviously duplicated.

I mean the bullshite ones are typically pretty easy to spot out and I typically don’t base my buying decision around reviews anyway

This is a good example. The reviews are so obviously faked that I purposely avoid the product or look elsewhere.

Do you think you may concern yourself too much with other peoples opinions?

Not saying in an a-hole way, just saying it in a 'take a chance' way

I don't know, but I don't use Amazon nearly as much as I did.. 3, 4 years ago. I just rather go to the store to buy something, so I can see it before purchasing it. I will order green tea and dog biscuits from Amazon and every once in awhile something I can't find anywhere else, but I find that some of their product.. even if it's the same brand I buy in the store, isn't the same quality..

Have they been accused yet of shaking down people in exchange for good reviews, the way Yelp does?

When you aren't familiar with the product what more do you have to go on?

Need something to judge the quality and effectiveness of a product sitting in a virtual world.

I haven't heard this about Amazon. Its more that cheap ripoff companies found the way to game the system.

Agree with you and adding to that is that all variances of an item are thrown in one big pile. It's generally worthless information.

One of two reasons I will have nothing to do with Amazon and closed my account 1-1/2 yrs.

I sort of focus on the 1 star reviews. Still have to sift though those, though.
Plenty of "wrong part", "wasn't OEM part" (even when you order , it clearly tells you so)
I generally like the long winded reviews, although I imagine some of those could be created by marketing people at the company selling the product.

No its everything. Electronics as a few people have mentioned.

Focus on the concept because it applies to nearly all, you're too distracted on the minutia

Then return whatever you bought.

There are a lot better places to review products than the website selling them.

True for everywhere.
