Partially because you could get dysentery from drinking water
yes
That is precisely my point. It is engrained and intertwined with large parts of the human experience for thousands of years

Never seen so many dudes so mad other people don’t drink
I don't see anyone here mad. No one cares you don't drink
quote:
Doesn’t change the fact that alcohol consumption, particularly by young people, is way down
It is, and its happened before and it will happen again. And people will drink again

Fruit of the vine and work of human hands...

I know I stopped drinking multiple cocktails about 2 years ago. Empty calories, link to some cancers and just don't enjoy feeling bad the next day. Most of my retired friends drink a lot. I can't do it. It is a depressent and I can't handle that either. Plus 14.00 for a margarita with my taco. No thanks.

Never. Cigs are trashy and the smoke is annoying AF

Sad that people need chemicals and poison to cope with life.

I cut way back last year. I should have cut way back ten years earlier. Once you hit 50, the sleep quality issue even after only 3-4 beers or 1-2 drinks becomes VERY noticeable. It just isn't worth it anymore. The pleasure I derive from a several beers or a few drinks on a Fri and/or Saturday night is not worth the cost of being groggy and foggy feeling on my weekend days away from work. It used to take 7-8 beers or 3-4 mixed drinks to do that. Now it's much less.
Bottom line, the ROI isn't worth it anymore.

Haven't been in a bar in over 20 years..... what does a draft beer even cost these days?

Alcohol has been around much longer than modern cigarettes. And although not good for you, it’s also not nearly as bad for you as smoking, assuming you drink in moderation and not all-day, every day.

It’s pretty fricking bad for you, no matter how bad you want to believe it’s not

Seems this was attempted once before.
There is still “The Mob” out there waiting……
Pot is getting stronger…..it will be reigned in first.

This is why drinking will never be shunned the same way smoking is. If someone smokes it immediately bothers every nonsmoker around them because they have to smell the smoke. Unless someone is sloppy drunk or spills their drink on someone else, drinking doesn’t immediately impact the people around the drinker.

People are more mindful of their health these days. Lot of 40-somethings I know have cut back or entirely eliminated booze. I doubt it will ever be as socially unacceptable as smoking is, though.

Drinking is down. There are plenty of studies from across a wide spectrum of institutons/organizations that show it's down. Business owners of bars and liquor stores say it's down, though I'm sure your knowledge dwarfs theirs.
And he's repeating what also has been reported multiple times by various groups - that alcohol should be consumed as little as possible - but you're accusing him/her of trying to fabricate something. Weird flex, but if it works for your ego, good for you.

I know alcohol isn't good for anyone especially long term, but I sure do miss the times in high school and college, going to a bon fire, everyone hanging out drinking, with the music on.. Its sad that today's kids don't do those things. Today they would be facetiming their moms showing her what the bon fire looks like. Telling them who is getting alcohol and maybe even inviting them to come hang out. We just live in an entirely different world today.

It will continue to decline, but I think the decline will level off. People will still enjoy wine with a dinner, a good beer on an afternoon or a fancy cocktail. We'll still drink a bit. Some alcohol isn't 'bad' for you.

The social stigma against cigarettes is almost entirely generated by and found in the upper middle class and the local, state, and federal governments which have done its bidding. Though I’m college educated, I live in an overwhelmingly blue collar neighborhood and there is exactly no stigma about smoking. At least a quarter of the block does so.
I speculate that we’re seeing the same dynamic at play here. We’ll see how far the people who “matter” have their way once more.
