TBF they should have named it for someone besides Leonidas Polk. He was an Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana who was appointed to the rank of general because he was a friend of Jefferson Davis and a cousin of James K. Polk. He was popular with his troops but a mediocre commander at best.

Edmund Kirby Smith was more deserving, and worthy of a better namesake than a ramshackle LSU dorm.

This is directed to Anyone in Merryville,

Is there anything y’all need? Who is the POC? I’m willing to load up and drive support, water, clothes, food or whatever tomorrow or Sunday.

I’d probably just contact the Beauregard sheriff’s office . They can probably at least give you some drop off points for food water etc.

Evacuations are still in place. KPLC.com gave an update about 45 minutes ago.

Water to the town has been shut off as well as gas and they said it will be a bit before power gets turned on again since everything will need to be inspected. I think what most people will need is a place to stay for another week or two. They have opened the fair grounds for pets and livestock and churches as shelters. People are donating plenty of food and water from what I have seen but no plans for anyone getting hotels or anything. FEMA or the state should be here helping people with that.

why’d they turn the water off? Water is handy in dry fire-prone environs.

I guess they will add the 12 lost structures on the next sit rep. I haven't seen mentioned exactly where or if they were occupied or unoccupied yet.

30,000+ acres is mind numbing truly insane when you see that. Generations of timberland gone in a just a few days

Yeah, seeing it compare in acreage to some of the bigger fires out West that they have to some degree "let burn" puts it in perspective.
