Three kids drowned around here last year after creeping into a neighbor"s pool.

I know a family in Florida who had a toddler found on the bottom of their friemds' pool this spring. Fortunately she lived after 911, hospital, etc.

Get that insurance.

My wife has wanted one for years since she grew up with one. I've always put her off. Now the kids are just about gone. I'm glad I didn't do it. I would hate to have to try to maintain that bastard.

You have to get "in" the pool

Having a pool lasted 5 yrs While the kids were in elementary school.
After they got to be in middle and then high school they rarely used it.
I used the hot tub part of the pool that was about it.
They had parties by the pool and they pullled many beer cans out of the pool. That was their extent of using the pool.
I ended up pulling the pool out and.redoing my backyard 4 yrs before selling my house.

The happiest day of the pool is when the liner is pulled out of the ground and it stops taking all your cash.

Any OT'ers installed one recently? Need input on average expected cost. Thinking $40k should do the trick. Am I even N the ballpark???

About $49K for ours. Did this two and a half years ago. Beach entry, heated, 650 sq. ft., etc.

Won't see any "return" on $49K but my children love it and as parents, it is worth it for us. Not planning to move anytime soon was also a deciding factor for us.

Yeah, people saying you can't do a pool for 40k are nuts. My parents put in a gunite pool with tanning ledge, concrete deck, and patio with cover for 40k. Pool isn't huge, but unless you have 10 kids, it's more than enough.

Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the patio and stuff, but the pool itself is nice and I believe it was around 27k just for that.

It can certainly be done and finished nicely in the 40s.

I did obtain 3 quotes and prices as you can imagine were all over the board for same type of design (had a landscape architect design my outdoor space).

One was as high as $77K just for the pool.

No thanks.

Just for point of conversation , how much does having a pool add to the cost of a homeowner's insurance policy

Directly, nothing. Most won't insure if you have a diving board or slide. It also has to be fenced in. Indirectly, you may want to carry higher liability limits.

A pool is totally worth it if you have young kids and plan on staying there awhile. I put in a salt water pool and have the following maintenance and costs per year:

$300 to open the pool
$200 to winterize the pool
$50 of muratic acid
$20 bag of salt
$15 bucket of calcium

I empty the skimmer every 2-3 days and backwash it once a week that takes all of 5 minutes. I think once a month I get the water tested and is usually entails a 1/2 gallon of acid. It's less than 15 minutes a week total. I could open and close the pool myself but I don't have time to do that.

My insurance company, USAA, did not care if we opted for a slide or diving board. So there are some that will allow this. For us, it didn't fit the look we were going for. Today, our kids use the back fountain wall as their "diving board."

We did up our liability limits significantly. Didn't increase our annual premium that much.

We thoroughly enjoy it. We tackled both projects (outdoor kitchen and pool) at the same time.

About to head out there for remainder of the day.

Pics added of our outdoor kitchen setup.

Not sure about there, but $40k will get you a basic pool, no spa and no upgraded features.

I paid $47K for mine. concrete/plaster surface, stamped concrete deck, tile borders, variable speed pump (big power saver) and the most important thing is salt water system which makes pool extremely easy to care for. The water ALWAYS STAYS CRYSTAL CLEAR. We love it and maintenance is truly minimal. I live on gulf coast so prices may vary in your area. Also you can't put in a shell if the water table is too high like it is in my area. Pool will float!

I'd be out there all day as well. I've got to do this so I can mount a TV underneath the cabana. That way, I'd really never come inside until Thanksgiving.

No slide no diving board--no additional insurance. Oh and no trampolines. I bought a house with a pool already installed. I'm a lazy man for the most part. It takes next to no effort to keep it right. Pool robot vacuum a couple times a week and add a CHlorine tablet every now and then. Would love to know what happened to some of y'all.

Just don't. Bring her to the beach as many times as she'd like. Buy a boat and bring her boating, water skiing, fishing etc. buy her season passes to a water park, take her on a tropical vacation or cruise. Don't get a pool.
