Any OT'ers installed one recently? Need input on average expected cost. Thinking $40k should do the trick. Am I even N the ballpark???

Like everything else in life, rent (get a membership somewhere), don't buy.

Depends on size, features (fountains, heaters, spa, gunite, shape) and amount of tile/travertine decking.

Low end...$40k
High end...limitless

Depends on what you want. To dig a hole is typically about 22-25k. Then you add from there.

The choice of tile, texture, and decking is what drives up the cost.

You get what you pay for. Find a good quality contractor and get what looks good and is also good quality. You won't get the money back that you put into it.

Is she willing to maintain it and keep it clean? If so, do it, but go saltwater.
