I have no idea what this means

quote:It would likely kill off some of your intestinal bacteria (we're heavily colonized by a whole bunch of different species - they are generally good, and having the variety keeps the bad ones in check in various ways). So, kill off the ones that are especially susceptible to the antibiotics, and the survivors are more likely to be resistant.
What actually would happen if you took antibiotics and don't need them? Just pass through your system?
Enough of that goes on, and more and more resistance gets out into the wild, and passed from one bacterial species to another. That ends up being generally not so good.
If you kill off enough of your own bacteria to really disrupt or even sterilize your intestinal flora, it's possible for Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) to get a foothold and re-colonize your intestine with nothing to keep it in check, and that's fairly bad - it's nasty.

I'm not reading through all the posts, but if someone said your doc needs to put you on alopurinol, they are right. I have been fighting this for years until I took it daily, no more gout.

I am by no means fat and I have flare ups with gout. It is caused by a high uric acid. Believe me you don’t want to have it. That is some of the worst pain I have ever encountered. It only flares up on my right foot. My doctor says that it is because I broke my foot playing basketball during my younger and dumber days

Yep you take too much... it will clean you out like taking that stuff before a colonoscopy.

Yeah. And what's the fix for that? Hee hee hee

My flare-ups always occur in my left big toe. If someone would use a blow torch on my toe, it would feel the same. I've never seen a dr for he condition but it will go away after a few days.

I will say that 4-5 Aleve ( Naproxin ) does work well to quell a potential big flare-up.

This is going to start being my go-to advice for people: take some random shite you've got laying around and see if it helps.
I guarantee that Prednisone helped. That shite works wonders.

Have you noticed any ill side effects? I’d rather not take a pill every day, but I’m at the point now that I need to seriously consider it. Ive never taken meds for it aside from steroids like Prednisone. I’m 42, and the gout episodes are occurring more frequently suddenly. I’m in pretty good shape and not overweight, but I can’t say that my eating/drinking habits are ideal.

I recently read about someone needing a poo transplant.

Fecal microbiota transplant. Supposedly you can give a fat person a dingleberry or two from a skinny person and it will populate their gut whith healthy bacteria and they’ll lose weight. I’d doubt it lasts though, because healthy bacteria need healthy food to live and compete with the bad bacteria and we all know that a fatty that let themselves get to that point doesn’t have the discipline to stop feeding those bad bacteria all those twinkies and soda.

Keep a dated log, maybe in the Notes section of your phone. Things you remember you ate or drank a few days before the flare-up. You will determine the common denominators over time. Maybe it’s periods of extreme stress. You have to be a Sherlock Holmes. This is a lifetime practice.
You also want to gravitate towards foods that keep your ph levels closer to 7. When you feel a flare coming, immediately take 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda in 4 or more ounces of water 2-3 times a day until it subsides. Eating fresh cherries is helpful to speed up the end as well but is not an immediate relief.
A near daily shot of Apple Cider Vinegar is a must as is a never miss daily tablet of Black Cherry.
A prescription of Indomethacin is invaluable also to take for 2-3 days to shorten the flare up. You may very well avoid taking daily medications if you manage your propensity to create and eliminate the painful crystals.
Over time, you can manage this pretty well if you pay attention.
And weirdly as it may sound, regular blood donations every two months help reduce the number of flare ups.
Good luck!

None, it lowers uric acid in your blood preventing gout. I used to get extremely painful flare ups every few months, allopurinol stopped it. I take 100mg daily.

Indomethacin to make it go away, Allopurinol to keep it from coming back. Do not take the Indomethacin on empty stomach.
Long time sufferer here. Since I got on Allopurinol about 2 years ago hasn't come back.
