Why would anyone build a new house?

Seriously! I’ve probably know about 15 to 20 people who have built or are building new homes and not one single time has it gone smoothly. It’s ALWAYS a huge headache and a pain in the arse.
And it’s always caused them tremendous anxiety. I’m not talking about small glitches here and there. There are always huge frick ups by the builders during the project. They always get something wrong in the blueprints or there is a terrible price misunderstanding. I would never build a new home!

the answer is they want a house on their terms, and not some cookie cutter house that looks exactly like all the others around.

I just built my house and it was fantastic. Very pleased with the experience.

Aren't most people building new homes gonna hire someone to draft it that is gonna come up with something similar to the cookie cutter stuff they have drawn up before?

My process went smoothly.
The worst part was the land clearing because a massive spring rainstorm hit for like 4 straight days right when they wanted to start clearing. That was a nightmare.
But the actual building part went fine.

Even full brick/stone houses these days look bad to me. Because instead of actual structural walls, it’s still just a veneer on 2x studs. It looks like it came out of a box. Very little new construction looks as good as a home built 60+ years ago that’s been well maintained.

I built a house. 90 days from ground breaking to move in on 8+acres.
It went smoothly and I ended up with exactly what I wanted. A 3400 sq ft walkout ranch orientated so I can watch the spring and fall sunset through the valley while drinking bourbon.

Homeowners are flaky and constantly change their minds. Id bet most of your people changed their minds about something midway through the build.
This is why a lot of commercial builders dont do residential.

to have the house THEY want? instead of having the house someone else wanted or some developer decided to build?

I’ve never bought someone else’s home. Built 3 so far and will build more.

By that logic, why do anything that's difficult or challenging?

Yep, everyone should buy houses already on the market and just do renovations to get them to suit their needs. There are never any issues with contractors when you need to do any renovations. Always finish on time, never over budget, and they never have huge frickups.

You can have a quality built house, or a house that doesn't cost a ton to build. You can't have both.

False.
You could have 30 years experience building houses and build your house yourself and have both.
Like my Dad.

Some people are just impossible to please and every experience for them will be miserable because they over analyze everything.

I built my last two houses and I'm currently building my mother's house. We went and found a floor plan and facade that we could work with online, brought them to an architect, and customized from there. If I'm buying a house, it is going to be exactly what I want. I'm not getting into a bidding war and overpaying for someone elses house that probably has some things I'm compromising on anyway.
