Trains systems like the one's in Europe would be a massive waste of money here in the U.S. Massive waste of money!

It's simple really, other than the DC to NYC route, there's no need for one here. It would be smarter to upgrade Amtrak, by making it better and safer. It needs better regulation.
Why take on the costs of building new rail systems for high speed trains that will have to be heavily regulated and made safe, when you have airlines offering a plethora of short haul flights, and 70-75 mph interstate speed limits? Not to mention you'd have to have to demand for high speed train service. Outside of the Mid-Atlantic and NE, it's not worth the cost.
Europe has a very different mass transit environment than the U.S. Shouldn't be compared at all.

In the US a trainI is more expensive than a car. Fuel costs in Europe are 2 or 3 times more expensive than In the US, so many people rely on trains. Autos are a lot more expensive to operate and maintain in Europe.
In NYC many people use subways because it costs more per month to rent a parking spot than the monthly note for a car.

I agree the distance changes things. I think we could drastically change the real estate market with better regional rail

Some growing metros could certainly use a light rail system. Although there are a lot of opponents of that idea in places that don't already have them. Some companies are banking on flying cars being the norm around mid-century. That may, or may not happen by then, but it would certainly turn any kind of train travel into a nostalgic novelty for the few in number.
In other words, it's getting too to start building train systems of this sort, imo. Once the system is constructed and put in place, personal transportation and developing technology will be on the horizon to replace it.

I've heard talk for 2 decades about high speed trains linking Atlanta and Chattanooga, Atlanta and Charlotte with time like 45 minutes.

We have the metra in Chicago, connects all suburbs to the city. Runs early mornings to midnight. Great service to have but if u miss ur last train out ur stuck till 530 unless ur trying to uber lol.

Texas has been talking about a bullet train connecting Houston to Dallas and passing through Austin for a few years now too. Hou to Dal in 90 minutes. $15 billion dollar project estimates. I believe the station sites in Hou & Dal have already been identified too.

The US is much larger, European population centers are much more compact.

In my situation, I can't make a flight to Houston work (and have been doing this for over 20 years). Most of my customers are in east and south Houston. Driving to BTR only goes to Bush and Bush is an hour away from south Houston. Hobby is closer to my customers but I can only get there via MSY so the drive to NOLA adds an hour (assuming an 18 wheeler does shut down the interstate).
If I can't make a flight work then a train will never work.
