Why Waiters Bring Water with Alcohol?

Why do waiters bring water with beer/drinks at restaurants? I don't water and it just takes up space on the table that is needed for more beers.

You can ask them to take the water away. I'd assume they want you to have the opportunity to not get wasted at dinner you classy frick.

I usually drink some of the water too. I like to stay hydrated.
One of the bar tenders at my favorite place said if he someone orders 3 drinks, he will automatically bring pour them a water. Helps keep things a little more sober.

Because they know that as soon as they drop off the drinks at least one person at the table will say "Can I get a water too?" and they are trying to save themselves a trip.

Water is good to cleanse your mouth with, when you move between different portions and courses. It also hydrates better than alcohol. I have use for both when I'm eating out.
