Trying to have personal relationships with co-workers. Play the game, make your money, and hang with your family. You can't mix the two.

Second day in a row with a thread to remind me of it all.
I used to not understand why people give up on themselves, but I do now. If it weren't for my kids needing a good father figure in their lives, I'd give up.
I don't want to blame bad parenting but I was raised being told that going to college and majoring in whatever I wanted was the most important thing ever. That I could be whatever I wanted! My talents as a kid were diminished for religious reasons and I was dissuaded by a bunch of cynics from pursuing what I probably should have pursued. So I entered college not knowing what I wanted to do, what I could do, and what it took to do anything.
So I chose a profession that I hated (because my then-girlfriend, now-wife was majoring in it) and didn't realize that the world isn't full of sunshine and rainbows where I can just leap to another job with financial security.
So here I am, watching the clock tick, waiting on the new crop of job applications to send me their rejection notices because I have a master's degree in Fancy-Pants-Academic-bullshite with zero STEM skills or experience outside of the high school classroom.
Y'all gotta start posting happy threads when I check the OT.

sometimes you just have to cut your losses and move on

Maybe they are afraid they will fail.. But there is no point to give up. Failure is part of life and how we learn and improve so whether you fail or not you always gain something.. But stress can also play a factor.

Some of it is how they are brought up, but I know a few people who’s live have fallen part in a just a few days. Sometimes your lucks just takes a nose dive.

Parenting definitely has a huge impact on personal development. Some people have shitty parents who constantly berate them and crush their spirit. It's tough for them to know their worth when that's all that they've ever heard.
Others are on the other end of the spectrum and they've gotten a trophy and a pizza party every time they've bothered to lift a finger. Once they get into the real world and are fed a few shite sandwiches they begin to realize that they're not very special or unique.
Both of those examples probably lead to an inability to cope when faced with adversity. They probably become discouraged and depressed rather than being kind to themselves and saying it's just life, try harder.

Most kids go through childhood never allowed to fail. Parents play it safe, protect them, teach them to find "safe spaces"
So they give up when faced with adversity. Adversity presents opportunity.
If you've never known much of a struggle, you'll fall apart when it finally happens because you have no coping skills.

Constant failure is very stressful and leads to a lot of self doubt and other problems.

Failure isn't really an option for me. I have a wife, daughter, and a son who depend on me. Sometimes shite sucks. Gotta move on. Get on down the road.

I always just got pissed off and pushed forward harder when things went against me. Why is it so many people these days do the opposite and play the victim?
The opposite of feeding off the negative energy is not “playing the victim”. I’m not sure what context you meant this post to fall under, but when I read the thread title, I immediately thought of depression. Those who are depressed don’t outwardly “play the victim”.
While you feed off that negative energy, and push harder to overcome it, it consumes those who can’t. If you constantly failed, or constantly lost that battle, the answer to your thread title becomes much clearer.
