re: Why Louisiana stays poor

I am all for tax exemptions and subsidies to attract businesses. But, are we really just rubber stamping these things without proper documentation and analysis? Do they really not provide ROI information and we really just rubber stamp them?
I mean that is stupid and all the sky screamers say “muh expansions!” Need to wake up. The process does appear to need improvements and yes we still need to offer incentives.

They're objectively stupid. They may have the ability to learn, but as evidenced by a lot of posters on this site, being willfully ignorant is paraded as some sort of badge of honor in Louisiana for some reason

The competition is high. Amazon got over 2 billion in incentives for their expansions.
It's just the way of doing business. You have to make some big concessions to attract industry.

GTFO with this Together Louisiana propaganda.
Louisiana stays poor because it’s citizens don’t value education while it’s politicians are complicit in nefarious activities that take care of themselves first. Preying on its populous with the idea that the government is here to solve all problems.
Did you watch the clip? It started off kind of propaganda like, but the last half on the ITEP #s is pretty strong. We cant call out one side, when the our own is soooo lopsided. Of course thats if the #s are accurate, but hard to say that it's not off some with such high #s. I dont think it's reasonable to get all the monies they estimated, but move it over some will help.
This new Amazon Effect version that is being seen in govt abatements is going to change some things as it seems both the left and right are on the same page. Dallas folks are super happy they didnt make the final cut after hearing it, and glad Gov Abbott keep Dallas Mayor Rawlings (lefty) in check during it too.
This group that put together wont acknowledge the culture piece i'm sure, and thats where they need to start coming towards the middle with. But at the same time companies need to pay their fair share too. No way in hell should a company not be paying 25%+ of their property taxes when thats a main rev source for the state. And thats pretty high imo, and the companies they showed aren't paying 60-99% ranges. That is NUTS!!! But they sure want to the state to keep roads, and other things in order.
People on the right have to recoginize this as our own level of welfare for sure. The one thing that kept me listening was when that Cage guy said in his disclaimer that these companies are only doing what they are being allowed to do legally, nothing illegal, so not their fault but LA's fault. That is a reasonable sense.
Now the left said needs to make sure they dont waste the money, and it's done right. Not a blanket teacher raise, but merit based.

Nah. Just because individually they enjoy their lifestyle doesn't mean they're stupid.
My brothers a CPA, loves living in NWLA. Most people I know are similar. They understand the State is a mess, but land and houses are inexpensive and they have a good lifestyle.

What years did the teachers receive raises and what %?
I know JBE really wanted to give the teachers a $1,000 raise. But not sure what percent that comes out to be for just avg teacher and not administrative.

Maybe we should just start over and say nobody is exempt from paying all of their property taxes based on a fair and accurate assessment.
Do that reset every 10-20 years. Make it fair for everyone.

Is it possible most of our citizens don't want to be educated and successful? That takes some effort....effort that a lot of people don't want to expend.
If you pay attention to the people asking for money, it's always governmental officials, not citizens. You see teachers always begging for more money, when the product they produce now is garbage. You don't see the students or parents asking for the schools to have more money.
Eta: That being said, we are in an advantageous position to capitalize on these property tax losses. It's not like a company is going to abandon a $20bn plant because they have to pay $10MM more in taxes each year

What an ignorant cheap shot.
How edgy to blame the religious for the economic failures of our politicians.
*A vote to legalize medical/recreational weed has never come before the people of LA. therefore there is no info on how a certain group would vote as a whole. Most people in my church want at least medical legal. If put to a statewide vote weed would be overwhelmingly approved with help from "the religious". Our politicians simply will not allow us the vote. Blame them.
*No vote concerning gays (legalize sodomy, gay marriage, health benefits etc) has ever come before the people of LA.
Without the opportunity to vote on these things how are "the religious" legislating morality???
Please explain your baseless attack...oh no. You can't.
Just another bitter intolerant and misinformed anti-religious bigot.

The state is ranked near the bottom in education yearly, and companies that are in the state can't find skilled labor.

A lot more than the 20 people you know live in the state.

Just post the graph of Louisiana corporate tax exemptions in comparison to the national average with other states listed and its alarming **IF TRUE**.

In general, because the bottom 30% in La is beyond repair

You called the resident's "stupid"
Most of you cannot fathom why someone would prefer to live in La than Dallas or Houston.

I can also tell you first hand how the cap on tax exemptions crippled the movie industry in Louisiana compared to before.

Considering I lived there for nearly 2 and a half decades, I think I might have a good idea.

But they won't build new facilities at the existing site or do any more capital improvements as they slowly move jobs and operations to other facilities.

Curious if they lived in those places and Louisiana and decided LA was by far the best

I certainly understand it, but many in Louisiana cannot fathom why some move out of state as well.
There is a compromise to everything, it's all about one's priorities.

Yes they will - look at the comparison of the tax breaks in Louisiana vs the national average. Its lopsided how much LA let's the plants keep vs other states. This is money that will go to LOCAL governments - not the state or federal.
