The only time Cadillac was on a true luxury level was the 50s and 60s.

Afterward they were just a nicer version of a Buick or Olds. Looked the same and mostly drove the same. Had a few more options and cheap woodgrain inserts

They went for volume. Got it for a quite a while but ignored how the market was changing away from rolling couches. I recall in the early 90's they were selling well over 100k De Ville's a year.

I'm getting one as soon as I build a big garage. I have two too many vehicles already.

The thing weighed about 5500 pounds and was about the size of a Suburban. Possibly wider.

While only having two doors.

Shame they didn’t stick around

Pretty tough for a car company selling whats equivalent to about a 300K dollar car by today's money to survive the depression era. But yeah I agree..

Wonder who owns the brand?? a revival could be warranted.

maybe Cadillac was never on that level. I’m talking about Rolls, MB Maybach, etc.

Well GM produces their cars on an assembly line. Rolls, Bentley, etc handcraft a lot of their vehicles by people with significant time put into learning their craft. So you tell me which would be considered on a higher level...

I had a 69, you're spot on about how many hides you could get in it.

I don't ever remember seeing any 12MPG.

The grill was made out of pewter or something like that.

It's been a while... Memory may be off slightly. Do know it burned a lot and I demanded cash for gas before anyone got in the car.

The metal grill was awesome. And likely weighed 50 pounds.

Cadillac was an innovator in engineering and design in the early/mid 1900s. Mercedes /BMW/Audi were not players in the game then as they are now.

To say Cadillac was never on that level is absolutely incorrect.

That 57 Eldorado Brougham I posted earlier had memory seats, among other innovations.

Nobody else had that in '57.

Autronic eye

My dad has told me about those. Good idea but reflections off of things like signs would cause them to dim when there was no other car around.

My 70 convert had climate control.

My wife’s Cadillac was a PoS. They have nice features, but they’re just engineered poorly

1) At about >150K miles, the DTS Norstar V8 will hemmorage oil
2) The electronic low-oil sensor is remarkably unreliable.
3) Asphalt driveways and leaves do a great job hiding a problem.

About 5 years ago I cross shopped the CTS with sport sedans from Audi, BMW, Lexus etc.

Sure the caddy looks pretty from across the parking lot and the specs are good on paper but once you sit in it you realize it’s not in the same class as the German and Japanese luxury brands.

I’m sitting in a brand new car and noticing trim panels that don’t line up, buttons that feel like they will fall off in a couple years, etc etc. If they can’t even get the damn door panels to line up right I can’t even imagine what problems are lurking under the hood.

No one in their right mind should spend luxury car money on a GM.

Looking back was that a mistake? I mean they made money short term but now the brand seems damaged.

Seems like they could have uplifted Olds to a luxury level and kept Cadillac as a rarer, premium offering.

I think the last Caddy chief (DeNasse?) was trying move them upmarket before he left the company.

Correct. I don’t think some of these posters realize how old and historical Cadillac is. The brand didn’t start in the 50’s. It’s much older. Surprise Cadillac wasn’t always a GM brand either.

Cadillac’s worldwide moniker during the depression was “the standard of the world” and they were considered pinnacles of engineering and highly awarded around the world.

They WERE the shite thru the 60’s. In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s they turned to crap and have had a hard time recovering from that GM stigma.

You have to remember back in the day, Buick and Olds were not bargain basement luxury as they are today (Buick). To own those cars one had to be fairly well off, Cadillac was reserved the elite of of the day.

I haven’t gone back and looked, so I wonder how GM positioned Buick and Olds to be different in the 50’s. I know they had different engines and sheetmetal but from a marketing standpoint how did they differentiate those 2 brands? I think Pontiac was already being sold as the ‘sporty’ alternative.

They damaged the brand but what has really been hurting them the past 10 years or so is the fact they have concentrated on cars versus CUV's. Completely missed the market when everyone else saw where it was going.

They got in early with the original SRX, which contrary to what some may think was a kick arse ride with the Nstar, but didn't go beyond that until very recently.
