Why isn’t Cadillac on the same level as the world’s best luxury auto brands?

GM had plenty of other brands they could have dumbed down for sale to the masses for ‘luxury’. Or is it just a part of our American culture to ensure that as many people as possible can have (somewhat) attainable luxury?

Or maybe Cadillac was never on that level. I’m talking about Rolls, MB Maybach, etc.

Rolls and Maybach should never be compared to a mass-market luxury brand like Cadillac.
Cadillac probably produces more vehicles in a week than Rolls and Maybach produce in a year.

At one point, Cadillac very probably was the engineering standard of the world, but that hasn't been the case in a long time.

i mean isnt the answer obvious? there is a recurring trend on things going down hill once something happens. It literally is batting 1.000.

yeah they did well with the CTS-era cars that were in the Matrix but it wasn't sustained

hell, Buick's whole campaign is trying this openly without any subversion via media

In its heyday, nobody held a candle to Cadillac in terms of luxury and technology. Now that would be the Toyota Century.

Cadillac has never in their history attempted to be on the level of a RR, Maybach, Bentley.

Cadillac has always focused on being an aspirational brand for the upper middle class. The guy who makes $2-3 million per year will not typically be shopping Cadillac but the guy who is in the $150-250k range probably will.

What about in the 30’s?

Or maybe Duesenberg was the only real American competitor to those European brands that we ever had.

That’s hardly a new stereotype either.

They really did. When they came out with the V coupe you could go spend a day flogging them around a track for free.
Fast, tough little cars, but I couldn't get past the B-Pillar design.

Cadillac was never considered ultra luxury like rolls royce or bentley.

They used to be on the level with mercedes, bmw and audi but even they have exceeded Cadillac’s level of luxury.
I’d put them on level with acura, jaguar and Volvo.

Their cars come off the line and perform well but they don't hold up well over time.

More expensive than a Rolls.

My wife’s Cadillac was a PoS. They have nice features, but they’re just engineered poorly. Nice technology. Cheap as all hell hardware running it. Garbage vehicles. Not as bad as Land Rovers though.
