Why is Vlad the Impaler not a more celebrated Christian hero?

He was a warrior for Christ on the order of the Archangel Michael.

I knew a Vlad the Impaler in college. I doubt Christians would consider him a hero.

I've always wanted to make a movie on the true story of Vlad without any vampire stuff. His methods were brutal but he did what he needed to do to protect his people from the invading muslims. Lining the road with people impaled on pikes was an early form of psychological warfare.

Well, being responsible for the killing of up to 1/5 of your own population will do that to you.

In truth, he was the the only leader at that time to answer the pope's call for a crusade and literally stopped the spread of Islam into Europe single-handed. But when you rid your country of the poor and lame by boarding them up in an estate and burning them to death, impaling monks for not agreeing with your policies, etc., you're not going to be held in high regard by most of the world.

I thought I remembered this. Guy at LSU wrote a book about this a few years ago.

I'm not so certain of this.

He mercilessly killed the Muslim invaders, yes. Impaled them, yes.

His own subjects that he impaled were dead from plague. Rather than bury them, he poled them up on the roads from Turkey to Wallachia.

In total, Vlad is estimated to have killed about 80,000 people through various means. This includes some 20,000 people who were impaled and put on display outside the city of Targoviste

Actually it wasn't at all. I don't even look at it as a "gotcha" as much as it is a very fact that righteous killing is all over the Bible.

ETA: I shoulda left this tranche alone so as not to derail the thread.
