Absolute hogwash.

In fact, it can be much cheaper. It just isn't pre-made.

Healthy food is more time consuming to prepare than unhealthy food. Few things are cheaper and easier to prepare than starches.

If we stop allowing super unhealthy shite to be bought with food stamps, that would be a great first step.

There is no reason tax payers should pay for Twinkies and Hawaiian Punch for people that need sustenance on the table.

Agreed. I would be for taxes going towards cooking classes. This would lead to healthier eating and all the benefits that come with it. Louisiana, and the south for that matter, just do not want progress

I know one thing, fat and chubby people In the south are still much more generally attractive. You ever watch HGTV and see when they go west or to the Midwest ? Son of a bitch that’s some homely people.

haven't read past the OP yet, so forgive me if someone already said this.

the hardiest and most adventurous were the ones who moved around and migrated.
from the Northeast colonies down to the south. That who came here and inhabited us.
The hardiest and most adventurous of those all headed out west as the country expanded. Leaving behind the ones that couldn't or wouldn't make that trip.

You're missing my point. I specifically mentioned fat acceptance and body positivity as net negatives when it comes to public health. Those are progressive ideals, and I'm not sure it's up for debate. It's also killing people, and prohibitively expensive in relation to healthcare costs.

Republican states are fatter, on average. Health shouldn't be a political issue, yet here we are.

That’s probably true.

People from hunter gatherer societies, and their descendants, are taller and more athletic than peoples who farmed.

Going from that civil war angle, perhaps the South lost its edge and hunger when the soldiers of the day lost the war. Their ambitions didn’t get passed along to their bloodlines. Take the passion and grudge out of the native old south folks and water that down with everyone else that’s moved in since then could’ve furthered that effect.

Southerners are over represented in the military, but especially in the officer corps.

It’s probably rooted in our honor culture, and the way we continue to value military service vs other regions which do not.

Geez. I simply can not imagine why I would want to get out and exercise less in the 95 degree heat with 100% humidity in this flat swampy hell hole. Really can’t figure that one out.

The South is mostly boring in terms of outdoor activities. We lack the great national parks you see out west. We also don't have cities with mass transit that encourage at least some walking to get around.

I think that’s the biggest reason.

• Labor saving devices and the shift away from field work.

• Automobiles.

• Air conditioning, we spend less time outside now.

• We’re wealthier and eat a more luxurious diet. The foods that were once reserved for special occasions are now staples. Raising Caines would have been a feast for our grandparents, for example.

• In the black community, I think the above point is probably doubly true. Cultures that have experienced famine or hardship tend be obese in good times. Look at how the black community is largely uninterested in hiking and camping, both forms of deprivation, in their own way.

I’d also look at how much poor southerners work, and what percent are permanently unemployed. Long hours could result in less exercise, and the unemployed are probably less active.

Too bad only organic and free range stuff is healthy. That normal stuff is all sugar.

exactly. Pretentious asswipes like him that think you aren't eating healthy unless you're spending $12/lb of chicken at whole foods are why people think its too expensive.

Yet outside of Appalachia, the pockets that dominate obesity aren't Republican.

Extreme obesity falls along socio-economic lines far more than political lines.

Whole Foods did something brilliant.

When you buy, what is truly an overpriced apple, you’re buying an Apple, but you’re also buying virtue.

For people who shop at WF, it’s often about feeling superior. And that’s why they’re happy to pay a premium, that premium is also a way of separating themselves from the people who don’t, or can’t, shop at WF.

The scheme is not unlike the what the Catholic Church did with indulgences, once upon a time.

(I shop at Whole Foods, for the record.)

The Cadillac effect. Higher price leads to higher demand, only explainable by superior marketing to dumb people.

I rarely go to WF, but this is one of the sillier things i've ever read on here, which is saying something
