re: Why is it socially acceptable to be “terrible with names”?

Business cards existed for this very reason. If I'm at an event and meeting 20+ people, they aren't all getting indexed in my brain. The interesting ones will.
I'm very good with faces, so I at least am able to know if I've met someone before. Also, pro tip, if you aren't sure if you've met the person before, the response to the intro is "hey, nice to see you." Don't add "again."

Haha ok guy. I’m sure you have some spectacular routine or phrase you say when you meet someone new. It called having social skills. I don’t think wanting someone to remember my name has anything to do with an ego. That’s just silly. It’s like the bare minimum. Is everyone here autistic?

One time I told a person my name twice and I still got a “what is your name again”
Maybe they don't expect to see you ever again and you are a forgettable type of person.
It might be because you are annoying to talk to, have a tick, or just come off as generally unlikable...
or you give off weirdo pedo vibes.

I was talking to you and told you my name, listen better please. Don’t just zone out when I talk to you.
Just a hunch, but might it be possible that you come off as someone nobody would want to speak to again?

Most times I find my brain processing all the non-verbals and I miss their name. I wish introducing the name would be in the middle or the end of the conversation. Like an email signature. That way I’m done processing all the sensory stuff and can pay attention to names

If you haven't pretended to forget some a-hole's name just to knock them off their game, you haven't met enough assholes.

What did you say your name was again?

I am fairly intelligent and have a great memory but names are extremely difficult for me. Even with celebrities, I can remember a face but names are a struggle.

Usually I forget names because for the first 1-2 minutes of meeting someone new, I am nervous and am hoping to make a good impression. I sort of black out. lol. It's the opposite of not caring...I care too much and become a ball of anxiety before I ease into the conversation. Then I can retain the rest of it just fine. I would like to improve my name-remembering skills. I guess I just need to go into a conversation knowing it's my goal.
I wouldn't assume that the person who forgot your name doesn't care.

Meh.... I am seriously bad with names.
It's not intentional.

I didn’t zone out when I was talking to you; my attention focussed on what we were talking about, and your name, as the least important bit of information, didn’t stick. It’s the same thing when I read fiction. I can answer any detailed question you could ask about the narrative, but if you give me a list of names and ask me to say who each is, I’ll struggle mightily.

I try to say their name at least three times durning the introductory conversation.
Nice to meet you philly444.
So philly444 where are you from?
That’s funny philly444.
Just work the name into the conversation. Not always possible and yes with some names I still forget but I never, ever admit forgetting someone’s name.
