re: Why is it so important to rich people that they signal their wealth to other people?

I've never understood the obsession with new cars and new car prices on here. Cars are depreciating assets. I look at a car as four wheels with air conditioning. I don't need anything fancy or new.

A lot of the people you are describing prob don’t save jack shite. Looking rich is smoke and mirrors for most people. Real wealthy people have robust investments and savings accounts and drive 10 year old Toyotas
I read the millionaire next door when it first came out (1996) and the most common vehicles driven by millionaires was a Ford F150 ( would have been GM but there are 2 of them and not just the one) and the most common held investment real estate was a mobile home park. The latter is apparently still pretty common....

sure...all people must get joy out of helping other random people, if not they must be faking it.
so many of yall are fricking clueless

I happen to feel the same way as you but others dont. and that is ok. not everyone is the same and its not bragging to have a new vehicle, only insecure jackasses look at the neighbor and their new car and think.....oh man, they are so fake and must be in debt up to their eyeballs.

This is likely because one doesn't become a millionaire overnight. The vast majority worked their asses off to get their and most realize it can be gone way quicker. Not many people wake up rich and go but new shite that day.

From a money POV relative to his wealth the wedding was akin to a couple sneaking off to the Justice of the Peace if their net worth was $100k. Average wedding in the US costs about $30k (insane) so a couples net worth would have to be around $1.1 million to match the Bezos wedding. Average net worth of 35 and under Americans is $185K so their wedding would cost $4810 if they spent the same % as Bezos did. Thats almost $29k less than the average.

I'm 39, I live comfortably in a 2500sqft house... I have an 8yr old ford truck and my ol lady drives a corolla (she loves her car)... we have 2 boats (17ft bay and 10ft john), no kids yet,
There's your sign my friend. You would be pushing 40 if your wife gets knocked up today...you'd be 58 when that kid heads off to college and 62 when they graduate and they are most likely going to need a few years after that to get completely off the payroll. So you'll be 64ish.
I realized around 2006, at 41, that I was not going to be wealthy and that time was running short. I sold my business and we moved to Europe. Since 2006 I have made it a point to work 40 hours or less a week and to do what I damn well please as much as possible. We make a comfortable living and have, within the constraints of full-time employment, have enough leisure time to be comfortable if not satisfied completely. I will be 67 when our daughter graduates college but I will probably "retire" before that...but I will continue to hustle on the side as long as I am able. Folks spend waaaaayyyyyyy to much time struggling for the legal tender when true love could have been a contender....

One of the richest men in Ellick when I was young was very lowkey.Had a decent house, nothing outrageous, drove an El Camino, never saw him in anything other than jeans pants-green,brown,black or blue.
It was mind boggling all the businesses and properties he owned.I wouldn’t have known about it except his secretary was my girlfriends mother.
I guess his main extravagance was his two airplanes one of which was a seaplane.Occasionally he’d want to go fishing a few hours. He’d go to Buhlow, strap a bateau to the pontoons, fly to Larto or somewhere, land in the lake, get in the bateau and fish awhile.
Had several nice camps around the state.
Just to see him around town and didn’t know him, would never guess he was so rich.

I think it is an amazing gift to be able look at someone's possessions and determine their net worth.
But this is the OT, where men can know penis size by the make and model of someone's vehicle.
Talented group here...

Its like anything else in life, you assess things based on the information you have, but if someone a family buys a house in the average neighborhood its because they likely make the average amount of money, etc just like 99% of the people who live there.. But then within a year they both get new vehicles, a new boat, a brand new side by side, gone on a cruise in summer after going to Disney world during the winter, send their kids to private school as they plan on putting in a new pool so the wife can lay out to show off her new pair of tits before having to go pack for the weekend for another travel ball weekend in which her and her daughter, who finally has a weekend off from competitive cheering, will go with one son for his travel ball tournament while the husband goes with the other son, whose team he is the first base coach of.
I just made that shite up, but its just an observation. If they made more than the average home then they would probably live in a better than average house and instead of driving Toyotas they would be driving Lexus.
You take all that with the amount of people in the US you are in debt and you can say to yourself "there is a decent chance they could be in debt". Its not an exact science but its amazing how much you can tell about someone just by generally observing them.

I think texas people are worse... mcmansions, 100k vehicles, debt up to their eyeballs, all for show... they truly care about what other people think of them, and it's kind of pathetic if you ask me
Why does this board assume that people can’t afford those houses and cars and still be debt free with savings and investments? All you can buy in some areas of Texas are McMansions. They don’t build 2500 sq ft houses in most areas of DFW. There are restrictions on what you can build.
Stop wasting time worrying about how other people spend their money and stop assuming things you don’t know.

We purposely bought our home in an upper middle class neighborhood instead of spending more even though we could afford it. Our McMansion IS us living beneath our means.

my family can help themselves except my parents.
my siblings were given the same opportunities as me, if they chose to not take advantage, that is on them. you dont go bail out people when they continuously make bad decisions
so yea i disagree.
