Had a family member die and I was tasked with handling getting her cremated. She died while in north LA and we just needed her cremated for transport back home. I looked online and learned that there is a minimum cremation only charge that is set by law in LA. I showed up at the funeral parlor and those scumbags were sweet as honey showing me in and started to try to sell me shite. I told them I just wanted the body cremated and they continued to try to sell me services. After about ten minutes of hard core used car sales tactics I explained again that I just wanted the cremation service and I dropped the bomb that I knew about the state mandated minimum charge.
It was like I flipped a light switch. The guy lost all the sweet, caring persona and it was like checking out at Wal Mart. The guy couldn’t have been more cold and in a hurry. It really showed me what a bunch of fake shysters those people are.

Funeral parlors are like riverboats. It a HUGE moneymaker that is protected by more red tape than a normal business, just like they like it.

The places that sold it for less were not funeral homes. You can buy a casket from a variety of vendors. It is against the law for the funeral home to charge you extra to handle a casket purchased elsewhere so they just offer a discount on the service when you buy a casket from them. It is a racket, they are no better than common criminals. It is not like there is a lot of choice to shop around for the plot and services. Even if you get buried on your own land you must use a licensed funeral director and they can scam you the same way.

They have their hands in the pockets of the politicians in Louisiana and probably every other state. The funeral business is one of the most regulated when it doesn’t need to be.

I personally know a guy that works for a mobile service. They pick up the body where ever it is located and then prep it. They do the service at your house or church and then drive the body to the cemetery or crematorium. He only has an add in the phone book. He usually works with people who have not done any preparation and they negotiate everything. He has a clientele and the actual funeral homes have a clientele. He also gets contracted out to funeral homes when they have multiple deaths to deal with. He generally works in Ascension Parish, but has gone all over for work. It seems like most of it is a racket.

Having had to deal with these shamsters twice. They only look at you as someone with insurance.
Some have packages that sound like you are saving money, but priced at what each line item is priced at together.
One line item that got me was the process and cost of a rental coffin. We cremated my mother to save on costs and to avoid purchasing an extra mosoleum space and have an open casket funeral.
The cost for that was almost 1100. It still cost around 3 to 4K for the whole thing.
She had enough life insurance to cover everything.
I guess where funeral homes think they can control their prices is that they handle the claims for the life insurance and get the check from the insurance sometimes weeks or months after the service. So they are essentially advancing you the money to hold these services.

I have a former boss who is a certified mortician ( got certified after retirement) he can’t find a job says it’s kind of cultish

the pne we used for my dad charged extra to make sure that all of his ashes were his. Otherwise, it was a toss up. If my mother hadnt been there I would have taken out a lot of my emotions on them just for that.

That sounds weird. Ashes can’t get mixed up in the newer cremation ovens. The process doesn’t allow but one in one out with all ashes into the urn.

I turned to her family and said “this is stupid, would y’all be up to getting a private room in a restaurant and buying all the attendees dinner while we have the service there? They all agreed and the price came out about the same.
My mother in laws funeral service was held in a steakhouse while her family dined on steak and had a beer. She would have loved it.

I honestly do not know what was what. That day was all about my mother and keeping her happy. I truly wanted to go off on them and now that time has gone on I feel like it would have been justified

Who knows. Someone told me one time that in order to get a job on any railroad (in this case KCS) you have to be in some group like the Free Masons, or something like that.

Sure it is, except for the part where they buddy up with the people who control us all at gunpoint and get them to eliminate any competition they don't approve of.

People think they have good ideas of what dad or mom would have wanted but there are many details and choices that are bewildering during times of grief. Nothing beats you doing your own pre-arrangements so your kids or family don’t have to.
Sorry that you were put in a shitty situation. A good funeral director is attentive and not used car salesman, at all.
