My deceased father in law was so pissed about the costs that he took a piece of his property and had it registered as a cemetery. He also bought an excavator. Although its mostly used for clearing cedar, this dude took petty to a new level so i'm fairly certain it was also so all his decedents could dig their own graves in the legal cemetery on the property. He was a raging drunk, but a bit of a legend too.

Seems to be either family-controlled, or run by a large corporation like SCi and Carriage (For you NOLA people, Frank Stewart used to be big into this, until his company was bought out by SCI).
I can understand regulation of cemeteries / mausoleums, as you don't want those just popping up anywhere, and the long-term nature of it means you want someone stable in charge of it.
But everything before the cemetery? Yeah, it's rife with protectionism.

I'll never understand why people spend 5 to 8 thousand dollars on a casket that will be seen for about 3 hours. Cremate!! It only cost about 1,100 dollars. Funeral homes are a rip off. Stealing money from grieving families and friends.

It was an open casket service. She was creamated between the service and burial.

My mother in laws funeral service was held in a steakhouse while her family dined on steak and had a beer. She would have loved it.
