They threaten tellers with their lives if they accept a fraudulent check.

In my previous life I was a manager for a bank. I'm guessing you didn't have the funds with the bank to cover the check you were attempting to cash. The bank does take a risk in cashing it, because if it were to come back after it has been cashed, then the bank could possibly take the loss if unable to recover the money from you. Also the teller that cashed the check could possibly lose their job. Why would you want to carry that much cash around for anyway? Why wouldn't you just deposit it? Again they would most likely put a hold on it unless you have the funds to cover said check. If you needed the funds right away you should have had whomever gave you the check to direct deposit it. If it is a personal check then again that just increases the risk.

If it really is a large amount....say $100k or so, then the bank may not be able to cash it. Most banks can't cash large checks like that and still have funds to handle other customers. I'd suggest asking them to cash what they can, then deposit the rest. If you actually have the funds to cover it like you said, just deposit it and do a withdrawal for what you need.

Split the amount in half and write two checks. Cash them on different days.

I didn't read other posts, but if you're cashing a transit check (not on a bank's account), then yes, they place a hold on a large check. If it's an On-Us check, no hold (or just an intra-day hold).

Edit: It doesn't matter who you are, or what sort of customer. Large transit checks have to be cleared.

how large of a check? I have cashed some pretty big ones and never really had an issue. They arent going to release 100k instantly, but I have never had any long delay

Whoa, internet badass! I'm sorry bro.
I stand by my statement though.
If you had enough money in your bank they would cash the check and you wouldn't have to WAIT. Unless your bank is retarded
