Doesn't make it any less dangerous.
Depending on the BAC, it's probably far more dangerous to be playing on a cell phone.
So why isn't it prosecuted like driving while impaired?
I guess MADD hasn't put their emotional latch onto distracted driving?

Which is why I alluded to you wanting prohibition.
Drink all you want, just not while driving. I've said that before in this thread.

It should be prosecuted more, and have stiffer penalties.

what else would they be for?

If it's irrational to not want my family to be the road with impaired drivers, then, yes, you are right.
You just justified prohibition.

Why is it so important to drink and drive? If you ever have a family member injured or killed by someone who was impaired or distracted you will understand.
So you want to reduce "impaired" (I use that term loosely) from driving home. Why not seek out better public transit? Or better placement of bars/taverns that is walkable from residences?
That would totally kill MADD's budget, and put a dent in the DWI racket though, so I doubt that you'll see it floated.
Sometimes I have hope BR will do this then I remember they outlawed happy hour to "save lives"

Yea, I looked for that stat, but it is probably impossible to find for the impaired driving. In 2010 (again, just because that was the year I could find multiple stats), the rate of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was 1.11. The only thing they have for impaired driving is the same figure against all VMT, not just impaired VMT, which doesn't get us to the figure we're looking for.
Another figure that at least points to an even less likelihood that an innocent person is killed by a drunk driver is that 65% of alcohol involved traffic fatalities were the drunk driver themselves. It doesn't reduce the "Deadly" aspect, but it does reduce the "Deadly for others" aspect.

Not reduce, stop. I don't want myself or my family on the road with any impaired drivers.

There is plenty in most cities. If not, there are taxi's/Uber/friends.
I'm out of this thread. It's obvious people want to justify their desire to drink/text/be distracted and drive. It just baffles and saddens me.
I hope none of you suffer loss because of impaired/distracted drivers. It's truly heartbreaking for those of us who have.

with all the prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and alcohol this will never happen

There is only one way to do that. Stay off the road entirely.

I'd wager smartphones are more dangerous than all of these

Oh, that's what you're talking about. OK. While we're at it, I'd like world peace and the end of hunger.
Now, with that out of the way, let's have an adult discussion relating to increased traffic safety, efficacious law enforcement and freedom from overbearing regulations and unwarranted government intervention. It won't be easy, because these are matters that are often at odds with one another, but the conversation is important.

there's no guarantee that person hurtling at you at 70mph on a two lane road isn't having suicidal thoughts and decide to meet you head-on at the last minute.
you put yourself in danger by getting in a car and assuming those faceless strangers you pass arent crazy/drunk/stoned/etc

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council unanimously passed the long-disputed ordinance Wednesday that will ban drink specials after 10 p.m.
The council voted 10-0 to pass the ordinance with four amendments.
The amendments moved the time the ban begins from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., excluded casinos, omitted the first paragraph in order to exclude restaurants and allowed bars to sell drinks up to 60 percent off the retail price.
The ordinance, which is supported by the Campus Community Coalition for Change, also bans bars from offering free drinks, holding games involving alcohol or advertising alcohol-related promotions.
The ordinance will go into effect when Mayor-President Kip Holden signs it.
Nancy Mathews, CCCC director, said her only comment on the outcome is that she is pleased.
Mathews and two members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving spoke to the council about why they think the ordinance is necessary.

Ah... I do remember that.
Bars all over town still hold late-night happy hours. They obviously don't really care about this ordinance.

Also the small amount of DUIs written. Let's face it, if the law really wanted to crack down on drunk driving they could write 100s of these a night
This is true, And how about setting up checkpoints after every LSU game... They don't have enough jail space....
