Yea, I guess this is really the answer. Maybe we could demolish those areas to build the new loop and bridge.

Yeah, I'm not sure where this guy's been. There are probably as many cities the general size of Baton Rouge in the country that have rather vibrant bustling downtown areas as there are that don't.

Yeah, but Jackson, MS, Montgomery, AL, and Shreveport pretty much are dead as well.

Between LSU and Downtown is straight ghetto.

They also used to put checkpoints right off campus to catch anyone coming back from there.

With that said, most downtown areas of cities are dying off a slow death. Covid really set it into motion.

This is not true at all.

On weekdays there is like 1 patron for every bar that is open. Feel like the city should do something to fix that.

Why should the "city" give a flyin frick if downtown bars are almost empty on weekdays? Maybe it has something to do with that area not being a safe place to daydrink??

It's interesting to ponder how different Baton Rouge might have been had LSU kept their campus immediately north of and contiguous to downtown, with the new State Capitol built generally in the area of the old one and the refinery built on the river more toward the south end of the city.

I would argue the placement of the refinery and the move of LSU's campus a good ways away from downtown basically sealed downtown BR's ultimate fate as a pretty isolated undesireable location.

To me, it’s a catch 22.

You need things to attract people to downtown, such as better restaurants, stores, actual free space, etc.

Problem is those things aren’t coming without a community in downtown to build for.

If no one lives or comes to downtown, businesses don’t come but at the same time, if there’s no businesses, the people won’t want to live or come to downtown.

Kip was working toward making a downtown<->LSU corridor along Nicholson but it started with incentivizing opening a business downtown and keeping the homeless at bay.

All Broome had to do was follow the path Kip had created, instead she just ignored it and it has slowly degraded.

It's just good practice for a city to have a respectable downtown area. People come and stay down there for business or travel and think the whole city is a shite hole.

Nobody wants to stay downtown after hours. They go to work and GTFO.

Broom ruined it with woke law enforcement policies like not addressing homeless drug addicts. Everything Kip built Broom destroyed.

Delgado, who owned several downtown bars and clubs, pissed Broome off when he ran against her for mayor.

Broome sought revenge via open container laws, etc. and shut down the Third Street scene.

15 years ago, Third Street was a great place to hang out on a weekend.

Some entity should have bought all those houses around wbrz and built a huge mixed use development all the way to the river.

The old streets in and out of downtown and LSU should have been torn up and redone for more direct flow from the interstate\highland \ burbank\ river road. It's too convulated to bypass undesirable areas.

Downtown died before catfish town.

Why do you think the City should open or develop private retail and entertainment businesses? That’s for the private sector to do and those very smart businesses people have obviously evaluated the situation and decided not to do it.

Why do you believe the government needs to be involved?

Following Katrina we worked in BR for a while. I liked downtown and thought it had better lunch options than New Orleans for regular people vs high tourist spots mostly. Sorry if it’s not the same anymore.

The city should be responsible for providing a safe and well laid out downtown. It seems like instead of making hard decisions, they just want to prevent people from going there.
