re: Why Is Blackface Offensive?

It isn't and never was. It's a form of comedy no different than black folks making fun of white folks mannerisms and dispositions (Chris Rock and Kevin Hart have made a fourtune doing it). It's entertainment that is all. But black and white racially driven people look for things to hang their hat on and this is one of many. Without these small amounts of fuel to fire the racial hate they have, racism could have died 2 decades ago. But the "reverends" and the "supremacists" need funding to make a living off of hate and bigotry so it will continue for a couple more generations.

Legit blackface is cartoonish looking and understandably offensive. Historically, it was quite racist.

Blackface was never meant to imitate blacks or black culture, which could have been flattering. It's played a we exaggerated caricature which I'm sure you agree is offensive, even being a mouth breather.

The intent of it back then was pretty racist.
I’m just calling it cartoonish to separate it from modern costume makeup. People seem to confuse/combine the two.
ETA:
FTR, I don’t care about offending people honestly. Comedy is better if it tackles otherwise uncomfortable topics. See Chappelle’s new special.
I’m just saying I get why the old school black face could offend people. And saying that is totally different than wearing brown makeup to dress up as an accurately looking black person.

Look, I get the whole "outrage culture is ridiculous", etc., thing. However, you'd have to be pretty ignorant to not understand this.
That’s what I was thinking.

This white lady wearing this hideous black caricature just shows why blackface is totally unacceptable and unrealistic and should be punishable by flogging

Bc some liberals decided that blackface is offensive
Blackface has always been offensive or edgy years ago. When photos are found however of someone 20-50 years ago doing it as a drunken college student, it’s much less offensive.
I am in my mid 40’s. I was a kid when Michael Jackson was at his apex of Thriller. Anyone of my age who acts like they never saw a white kid dress as MJ during Halloween is full of shite.
Going back in time to retroactively apply today’s standard to old shite is a new thing and it is asinine. I fricking hate it.
But make ZERO mistake. If you do it today. It’s offensive.
Google minstrel shows or the looney tunes forbidden episodes (can’t remember the number) that shite was offensive. If it’s funny because it makes you cringe. It is offensive. Now does that mean bugs bunny and Hanna barberra should be outlawed in all forms? Nope that’s what Twitter culture does.

This is intellectually dishonest on so many levels. Blackface goes far beyond a simple parody. It was so much deeper than just comedy, I could explain but I get the feeling your mind is already made up on this. Oh well, remain in ignorance.

Along those same lines, I had a scoutmaster back when I was a kid who once dressed up as Hammer, complete with parachute pants, blackface, and a wig for a scout Halloween function.
His daughter in law thought the idea of the stodgy West Point grad / lawyer doing that was funny as hell when I told her about it around 20 years later.

I’m glad I don’t live my life looking for things to be offended over.
Gotta suck.
If I were the gov I’d double down on it and say F y’all I’m not resigning from shite.
Get a real job bunch of fricking crybabies.

If society at large is going to be offended by blackface, how can it not be offended by drag queens, bull dikes, etc.?
Posted on 8/30/19 at 8:25 am to ragincajun77
Blackface started after the civil war when white actors would put charcoal, or shoe polish on their face and exaggerate their lips to appear black. Some of these caricatures had names such as Mammy, Uncle Tom, Buck, Jezebel, and Sambo.
It should be noted that many black actors also wore blackface as many white audiences didn't want to see them without it.
I dont get offended at all as I took an "I don't give a shite" approach to life but...
This is too much.
With that being said I had no problem with Jimmy Kimmel playing Karl Malone, or the white dude in the 80's movie, where he pretended to be black to get a scholarship to Harvard. Hell RDJ was funny as hell in Tropic Thunder.

Kay Ivey should have said "If you're upset by me doing that in college over 50 years ago then I apologize for you."

It’s not offensive at all. It’s actually pretty funny but apparently having fun isn’t allowed anymore.

I agree entirely with your take.
But, it's 2019...so frick that attempt at nuance. It either has to be 100% fine, or 100% offensive. Why be intellectually honest and admit that Al Jolson was pretty fricking racist while seeing some little white girl dress up like Beyonce and darkening her skin to look as much like the person she's dressing up as is entirely different in both spirit and intent?
Much easier to just be outraged...

Lol, it was a legit question. No need for the hostility.
