Why Is Birth Control Considered A Sin?

I don't know all the religions that consider birth control a sin.. But I know the Catholic church does.
Awhile back a guy I know was thinking about going get snipped and decided to consult with his priest and after doing so he decided not to do it. They continue to do that whole family planning thing.
Humans are the only animals who have sex for pleasure. Before there was birth control, I am sure that's why people had big families.. 8-9+ kids.. Imagine if that trend only continued? Baby Boomers didn't have as many children as their parents and I am sure it's mainly due to the fact birth control became available to them. Imagine if baby boomers continued the trend of having large families.
I'll use my family for example, my mom's parents had 8 kids. My grandpa was in WWII, he came back from the war and started having kids. But of his 8 kids, the one with the most children has 4 kids. Imagine if those 8 kids had families like they were raised in. We talking 8 people having 7, 8...9 kids. If the 8 kids each had 8 kids, that would be 64 kids. And if those 64 had an average of 8 kids thats 512 kids. That would be insane.
So why would birth control be discouraged? Do they just want people to have a lot of kids to keep the population of whatever religion... up?

Less children to rape.

Because Catholics believe birth control is abortion, and abortion is sin.

Because the Catholic Church survives on More Catholics. So telling your faithful Catholics that BC is a sin is a way to ensure you get more Catholics. It didn't work all that well and is much less taken as seriously today.

because sex should be for procreation, not fun

The big family thing used to be a real need. Needed the help to maintain farm lands and such. The tradition stuck around for a while, especially in rural places.
As for birth control, the church says it is a sin because you are denying the natural process that creates life. And premarital sex plays into that, too. But right now, I’m having a harf time calling myself a Catholic. It hurts to say that, but recent events have inspired that.

I thought that Catholics just believe that sex is for procreation and not recreation. I didn't know that it had anything to do with abortion. If that is the case, would they be against pulling out?
And to the OP's point about larger families, large families were desired a long time back for family farms and such as much as anything. People died earlier in life and in childhood more than now.

I guess he didn't realize there would be people who would have a bunch of kids just so they could get more government assistance or that there would be a time when... If people have more than 2, 3.. 4 kids, it would break the bank to raise them all.

In your case Oweo, maybe it should have been mandatory for your parents?

To paraphrase what I learned in HS religion class, all sex acts have to qualify for two things:
1. Unitive: must be in the confines of marriage
2. Procreative: must be open to procreation
Not exactly true. The teaching is not that it's not for fun. Just that there should still be an opportunity for procreation.

Short answer is that Catholics hold the gift of life in the highest regard and believe it’s not up to a person to choose whether or not another soul is granted life on earth. At least that’s how I understand it. Natural family planning can work very well when done correctly. I am catholic but I don’t want 8 kids.

If you are Catholic it is very clear about the power to bind and loose and the part about whoever listen to you listen to me. It is the height of pride to think we know more than the Church and the words of Christ Himself.

It goes all the way back to the Book of Genesis (1:28) where it says "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." Some believers think that God commanded it and therefore it is a sin if true believers prevent pregnancy by using birth control.
