Why is artwork from local or not-famous artists so expensive?

Good paint is expensive and I’m sure a ton of work goes into it. Is their time worth $20/hr when they’re painting?

I bought 3 paintings from a sorta known artist from a place in Mandeville. This was probably 10-15 years ago. Turned out they were fake, the owners went to jail and by some miracle we got our money back.

Because people want to get paid for their work?
If your 3 year old could draw it then by all means get them to draw it. Then get the connections to display it. Then spend the time schmoozing with rich assholes trying to sell it.

But that’s around $500-750 in materials. If she’s got to move it to a gallery in another town another $200 in transport costs. Plus the gallery’s cut (say $1000). She’ll spend 30-40 hours on a piece.
$30-50/hr seems reasonable. And I’m not even factoring other marketing costs, taxes, etc. that eat into her bottom line.

If it took them 36 hours to complete a painting and sell it to you for $500... They made less than $14 an hour (minus the cost of supplies). And that's for a basic painting.
If you're buying a beautiful work of art from a talented artist, you're not just paying for the time and supplies put into the painting. You're also paying for the lifetime of training and practice that the artist has experienced.
There's an old story about a man asking an artist why he should pay him for something that he completed so quickly. The artist replied that he wasn't paying for the few minutes of work, he was paying for the lifetime of practice that went into the artist being able to do the work of art.

I’m pretty sure OP is just talking about the very basic like 8x11inch size basic paintings crack heads want like $800 for.
It’s because they are idiots OP and they see one person that’s great selling for a lot and think they can get it also.
If I go back to the same restaurant with your painting for $600 that’s been there for 3 years, then your price is too high.
I understand material cost, but we aren’t paying for their time or materials. That’s up to the artist. If their painting sucks but took them 80 hours to do that doesn’t mean they deserve more than someone who is great and takes 5 hours to do the same.

Bought an oil from Rolland Golden in 2005 when he had his studio down in the Quarter. Thought I overpaid for it then, but I’ve been offered twice what I paid.

I won’t speak for others, but my daughter is an artist and I’m her “manager”.
What she does takes days, sometimes weeks, to complete.

lol, no. It’s what someone will buy it for. I’m sorry but just because you think you deserve a certain amount doesn’t mean jack shite if no one will pay that.
Being an artist is like starting any new business. Until your name is out there and you have earned it, you don’t deserve anything. That includes material costs. There are plenty of professions where you work your butt off for little to nothing the first couple of years.
