Because fricks given would be less than zero

There’s a lot of classic American excitement in your examples. You can see our optimism in those restaurants.
It's funny that you're mentioning this...
I remember passing through Alec back in the early 80's, headed to Toledo Bend, they still had an old school McDonalds with the golden arches that I was really happy to see. Unfortunately, they tore it down and built an up to date one.

Because they don't want you hanging around. The last couple of brand new Chick-fil-A stores I've seen are drive thru/walk up only. No seating inside at all.

Not only are materials more expensive there is a lack of skilled laborers that can execute more detailed projects. The guy that is expected to build the Taco Bell these days was literally flipping burgers in the McDonalds yesterday.

Communist shitholes aren’t what we’re talking about. America is capitalist, but capitalism isn’t the problem.
The bigger issue is education and citizen awareness of freedom of choice. You have to have informed citizens to maximize the potential of capitalism. These fast food restaurants look like bland boxes so that different chains can move in and out without any trouble for the landlord. If customers voiced their protest with avoiding them, they’d be forced to adapt or perish.

You should check out Russia or the old Soviet states. Archeticual masterpieces galore.

They just tore down and built a new McDonald's in BR and this is exactly what it looks like. Out near my MIL's house in Alabama they still have an Arby's with the big hat. The building has been updated but that hat makes me happy for some reason

A lot of commercial architecture these days seems very focused on awnings, and I fricking hate awnings. They're cheap, flimsy visual trickery, and zoning policy should restrict them more tightly.

Quite the opposite. Brutalism and modernism trace their roots back to the Soviet Union. Architecture schools are often the most liberal of technical fields in higher education.

To me, that's awesome... I like the way they used the glass and tiles to complete that original look... I think Mc Donald's and other fast food places need to do this more.

You think the “nice” designs pictured are pre WWII? I would have guessed later.

Architecture isn’t necessarily bland today. Just certain segments.
Back in the day, fast food restaurants designed with marketing in mind. it was an inviting night out and needed to grab attention.
With TV, social media, brand recognition, fast food doesn’t need to do this anymore. They need to be efficient as possible and put up as many locations as possible.
Different industries design differently. Plenty of cool buildings going up in my neighborhood. Even the new bars are doing some cool shite…bc they need to market their space with a cool design and inviting atmosphere

Our town had this for a long time, I think it finally got removed about 7-8 years ago. You would have thought the city's favorite son died, it was a big deal when they took the hat away. Kinda funny, but I get it, I was from the era when that was new and a big deal so it was sad to hear it was gone.

its because youve chosen mega corporations rather than mom and pops, which unfortunately is the norm now. McDonalds, BK, CFA, Taco Bell are just like starter home neighborhoods. To save costs and ensure the brand, they offer only a couple of design options.
I dont have anything against these corporations for doing this. It's probably smart business. Customers will mostly choose lower prices and consistent products over the opposite.
But given the option, I try to shop at local places like hardware stores. You cant replace the old guys working there to give you actual advice.

I read an article recently about how social media algorithms are causing coffee shops all over the world to look the same. Everybody is chasing the same trend and it proliferates. Ingenuity is discouraged. Just join the hive-mind and put some floating shelves on that exposed brick wall like I told you. Enjoy your latte.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Mega corps have taken over most of retail and a huge chunk of the restaurant market, both fast food and otherwise. Everything is designed to be standard and non offensive. This has slowly become the norm rather than the outlier it was 30-40 years ago as the corps took over everything.

Yes it is much worse, those early Soviet Union housing complexes are worse than the projects. Now the architecture and designs in Eastern Europe predating communism were incredible

I miss art deco. We really lost out in not keeping that style going throughout the last century
