Yep.

I’m half-Sicilian, and my great great grandfather was a member of what was called the ‘Black Hand of the Mafia’ in New Orleans in , i believe, the early 1900s.. there was a famous murder of the 5 heads of the families (inc my GG Grandfahter) in the French Quarter, and there’s lots of info online if you are inclined to want to check it out.. pretty fascinating stuff.. NOLA was third to only NYC and CHI in terms of mob activity... Also, Mosca’s across the river is where a lot of the mafia would regularly meet in later years.. it still stands today, and has excellent cuisine.

I knew Buddy Diliberto pretty well growing up because my Mom worked with him. The mob kept him alive after not paying his gambling debts and his bar was a money laundering place to repay them.

Actually, that movie and Garrsion's book/prosecution did more to shield the mob in New Orleans than anything else.

Absolutely.

Not saying you are lying but I am referring to the other 99% of these people being full of shite. They just watch too many movies and have an italian last name, therefore they have an obscure uncle somewhere that was or is in the mob

When the early New Orleans mob had police chief David Hennessy killed, it would be the first and last time the civilian population turned on the mafia and won.

...Unless you count Rudy Giuliani.

My honest opinion is that they were / still are active enough to make it dangerous for one of those tell alls like you've seen from the New York families. All those details came out because people got caught, wrote memoirs, etc.

It’s cool.. and i dont have an Italian last name.. i dont even claim to ‘know a guy, who knows a guy’.. just have some obscure ties to a long-dead relative who i never met, and i only discovered it in the last couple years so thought it was interesting.

I liked it.

Which is what I found so charming about it. It did crack me up that he talked about how buff he was. Did he not know that the editors were going to put pictures of his skinny arse in the book?
