From the expression on his face, it does not look like he liked wearing that get up all that much either.

Like I said above this is apparently not that uncommon for country folk... what I find really outrageous is the one or two people I've seen do this at a damn funeral!!

Dressing up means tucking in the PFG shirt as opposed to letting it hang out.

Go look at old photos of college football games from the 50's. A lot of men in the stands wore shirt and tie there as well. But, I'm not wearing a suit and tie to a football game.

Clip on ties couple with short sleeve shirts really grind my gears.

Who can't deal with a long sleeve shirt and a tie for a couple hours at any given time.

Do you remember when folks used to get dressed up for LSU football games?

Who the frick wears just a tie with no jacket. Is this shirt also short sleeved?

It's either shirt no tie or jacket no tie. Unless you want to look like a goober

It is a great way to let people know you are a bank teller.

I was at a wedding last week and there were at least two hicks wearing baseball caps at the reception.

But were they their dress caps... you know the ones that are still stiff and stain free with neon green mesh... that makes it a class move

You just described my grandfather, may he RIP. It could be 20 degrees and sleeting outside, and he's walking into the church in a short sleeved dress shirt and a clip on tie. Some of us even tried to teach him a simple tie knot, but he would then just loosen it and slip it over his head until the next time he wore it. Not all old folks used to care. He was going to be comfortable no matter what.

We used to take my grandparents on trips with us. One time it was my wife and I, my parents, and grandparents. We had reservations for some nice restaurant where we were, and he walks out of the hotel room in jeans and a polo shirt, tucked in, and my dad asked him if he brought a nicer shirt and some pants. Probably not the wisest thing to say to your father in law. He said this was his nice stuff and if we were going somewhere he couldn't wear this he would just walk to McDonald's down the street. Then he complained that it was probably one of those places with fancy tablecloths and the lights not bright enough to read the menu. He probably called my dad a few choice words in there as well. I don't think what he was wearing ever came up again.

Personally I think it looks terrible to wear a tie with no jacket. It makes people look like a college kid going to an interview at a crappy hourly job.

Not wearing at least a jacket/sports coat to a funeral or wedding screams redneck/white trash.

Wrong.
It can be done very well, you just have to know what you’re doing.

Because if you don't live in a major city like NYC, DC, LA, ect, when you dress nice, people assume you're:
1. out of place
2. a try-hard douche
3. you think you're better than everyone else

You gain comfort by dressing down but you lose something too . Dressing appropriately to big events is a way to bestow honor and respect upon that event . It’s something that is cross - cultural and universal to mankind . We dress in our best to our more significant events - it’s a sign of mutual respect - to each other and to our larger culture. As that is being lost, it is likely that the significance of those events and the respect we extend to others are being diminished as well .
