My daughter can have hers at school, but can only use when not in class. I like having the ability to text her during school. It allows me to tell her how she is getting home, or tell her of changes of plans.

Same. My kid is old enough to drive now but doesn't have her license just yet and can't drive to school anyway this year. But she has friends that drive and she'll occasionally ask me if she can go somewhere after school etc. It's convenient for situations like that.

Parents like you are the problem. Students do not NEED a cell phone during school hours. School systems are scared to take them because parents will literally threaten teachers/administrators with physical harm if they do (I’ve seen it). As someone said, reaching your kid at school in case of emergency can easily be done through the school.

I don’t have problems with students actively being on their phones during class. They are allowed to have them, but they stay in their pockets/book sacks. You want an immediate confrontation with (some) students? Tell them to turn over their cell phone. I’ve seen many students absolutely refuse to the point of having to be removed from the classroom by an administrator.

It’s a big problem that doesn’t have to be a problem, but many of these kids’ entire lives are wrapped up in that cell phone.

Parents like you are the issue. All their friends are in school so they don’t need it. The teacher and school are in charge and if you don’t like it oh well

Teachers absolutely have the right to take a phone in class if being used when they are not supposed to be. However, they should return it once class is over.

You saying this is stupid, you don’t know me nor my kids.

Where did I say they needed one? I said a school isn’t keeping my property and I’ll ensure it doesn’t go back.

Fwiw my kid can have his phone but he doesn’t go with it but has his Apple Watch. Never had an issue.

I am getting downvoted for saying I don’t want a teacher or school keeping my property. The same system that allows phones and has many issues these days. A teachers job is to teach, any disciplinary needs to be done by someone in the office.

A school also isn’t going to keep a phone in their desk all year. And everyone who is taking my comment wrong would absolutely have a melt down and come here to post about it.

Teachers and schools are failing our kids and no they aren’t keeping a cell phone hostage for a school year.

I let them dick around and fail if that’s what they want. I’m just upfront with them at the start of the year/semester with what’s gonna happen.

When I'm meeting with students, I don't ever say anything when they have their phone out.

If they're fricking around on their phone and miss something I said, then it's their problem. My job is to give them information and if they want to not listen during the appointment they scheduled, not my problem.

For high schoolers and college students, when it comes to phones, I think they're going to need to learn the hard way. When a teacher/professor/advisor/counselor tells them something and they don't hear it because they were dug into their phones, too bad. Next time, actually listen.

We see a phone, we take it and they get it back at the end of the school day. If it happens again, the parent has to come pick it up. That works best because the parent is inconvenienced.

Yep, my daughter fricked around and found out for incident #1 so she's terrified to have it taken a 2nd time She and I both had to sign a piece of paper saying the next time it was gone until May. This is high school.

Damn. I wish. Most public schools won’t even let you take them up a all for fear of it getting stolen and having to replace it.

I’m in college and they will kick you out for using a cellphone in lecture I understand being disrespectful and all. It can deff go 2 ways though.

Another thing, my kid got attacked by another and called me with his watch to give me a heads up. 10 mins later school called me to say he was in a fight but not his fault.

So….

Well as a parent, I do. I send them there to learn. It seems like every day there is bull shite drama and fight club. And it’s not just my kid. I have went and talked directly and the principal even admitted they don’t have enough to see what’s going on. That’s bullshite, if school was about learning and not this modern day bullshite there’d no issues. Instead most schools are failing because they can’t find good teachers and have been hurting to even find subs.

I’m very involved in my kids schooling. Teachers can do no wrong…. Yet they have sex with kids, kids have more issues, and our society is going to crap.

Again, ban phones for all I give a shite, including teachers. You’re not keeping a phone indefinitely though and you can kiss my arse.

They have to go turn it in to the head of discipline for the school. He puts it in an envelope with the kid's name on it in a safe in his office

I can almost guarantee you that my daughter wouldn't use her phone if the school was on fire now

Haha, I hear this shite on a weekly basis. I’ll call the parents saying the phone is a distraction. They’ll promise to take it away and yet the kid will have it two days later.

Umm, it was a generalization. No, I don’t know your kids, but I do know kids. If they are allowed to be on their phones, most will be on their phones. Learning and what the teacher is saying be damned.

You might ensure it doesn’t go back, but the vast majority of parents won’t.

I disagree. Modern parents are failing their own kids, for the most part.

You misunderstood my post. My students don’t have them out in class, therefore it’s not a problem for me.
