Last day of school was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and you didn't go back until the day after Labor Day.

This was how we did it.

But we never EVER had school cancelled due to weather (unless a hurricane directly hit Terrebonne parish).

This shite nowadays where school is cancelled every time there’s even a threat of rain is a joke.

supposedly it's because they don't want school buses driving in it... I cant think of any other reason. These people are literally professional drivers, they should be able to drive buses in bad weather.

I taught school for 22 years. You would not believe all the time that is wasted in schools. We don't teach time management in our schools. If a child can't learn what they are supposed to in 9 months something is askew. School should start day after Labor Day and end right before Memorial Day.The school year was extended when Govenors Foster and Blanco granted teachers more pay raises.

Wednesday was technically the middle of Summer (mid-point between the Vernal and Autumnal Equinox).

Louisiana has always been a little off because of Mardi Gras. But it’s worse now since Katrina Rita Gustav Ike and also the 2016 flood.
Those all wrecked havoc with the school year so they have built in weather days so that for relatively minor weather issues they can rearrange days and end the year close to on time and still get 180 days in.
Obviously a huge flood or hurricane like Katrina would still wreck havoc. But other ones where 3-5 days of school are lost can now be absorbed into the same schedule

Aside from teachers unions, I am not sure why they get off entire summers.

In the late 90s and early 00s we started in early September and got out in early June

School year ran from Labor Day to Memorial Day when I was growing up. Some of our schools didn't have AC though so that was part of the reason. We also didn't really have many holidays. Couple weeks for Christmas, Spring Break week, Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving, and a couple of in-service/teacher work/conference days, and that was pretty much it.

Summers seemed so long when I was growing up, and they fly by now. Part of that is age, but part of it is how short summers actually are now for kids.

Seemed like in the early 1980’s , HS started in Baton Rouge around August 27-29 th ? Got out for summer around May 27-29 th ?

Wasn’t there 180 days of schooling for a school year ?

That's about what I remember too. It seems like they've just shifted it up a few weeks for whatever reason

There’s more breaks in the fall now. They have to start early to finish the first semester up by Christmas.

Week in October and November.

Are there valedictorians in high schools now ? Or does everyone make the honor roll and get numerous patches for their letterman jackets ?

Summers may be shorter, but the total days in a school year has grown less than a day since 1980.
