Some school systems in metro Atlanta went back before August.
And I thought I had it rough going back on like Aug 20th as a kid.

Many of the schools in the east valley out here (Chandler and I think Gilbert) do a version of a year round schedule. Summer is only like 5-6 weeks long. They went back to school mid July. But they get more time off scattered throughout the year.
The friends I have that live in those cities with kids seem to like the semi year round schedule.

Both of my parents grew up in Chattanooga and they had it made in the 60s and 70s. Last day of school was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and you didn't go back until the day after Labor Day.

If they don’t start early, how are the parents going to cheat on one another and file for divorce so our lawyers can make money?

My wife's family has a few teachers in the Chicago area, their last day was June 10th. Start back up the Tuesday after Labor Day

Colleges in Louisiana get it right. Out in early May and back in late August.

Built in weather days, teacher training days, plus they get a spring and fall break in addition to Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

LA has Mardi Gras so that may be one factor

We start on Wednesday in Kansas. (Some schools start Tuesday). Just think that’s the way the cookie crumbles these days.

The Easter break in Louisiana replace spring break in Kansas.
As far as Mardi gras goes we get Presidents’ Day off here which usually extends into a teacher inservice day on Tuesday and some sort of bs day on Wednesday (it was an act day last year).

Why does school start so early in LA?
So we don’t have to make up snow days.

To get in maximum number of educational days before standardized testing.
