The problem is that there isn't that much else that's easily drivable and also interesting from the Gulf Coast
This is the problem. If you don’t want to drive more than 5 hours, your options are basically the beach or Houston. If anybody has other ideas within that range, please share. We fly to cooler places, but long weekend drivable trips have gotten stale.

Because the kids are out of school.

Because it's relaxing and I like it?

Lots of baws like to look at women in skimpy bikinis

We do beach (quiet SC coast and Forgotten Coast FL) trips in late fall and late spring and Rockies in summer and chunk of ski season. Appalachians rest of time.

The beach is cooler than inland in Notth Carolina. Nice breeze and lower humidity.

I hate it in the day, but hearing those waves crashing off the Atlantic at night while smoking a cigar is pretty special.

I've lived very close to the beach my whole life. I basically have to be drug there to go and sit for any length of time

My idea of going to a beach is staying at a resort overlooking the ocean.
Chillin in an infinity watching the surf go in and out while they ferry margaritas out to me (with a floater of course) works just fine.

Big... Tan... Titties...
Also...
1) It is a vacation I can drive to within 4-4.5 hours that offers something I don't have at home.

The beach is ok. It’s the Phoenix XIXIV high rise condo that sucks. Harder and harder to find a low density area.

Fall after Labor Day is the ticket. Still warm, but not oppressive, less traffic, lower rates, better restaurant service.
Fishing also gets pretty good. September and October are a gift from the gods rewarding man for surviving August....
