in other words = "they aren't flaming liberals like I am, therefore they are wrong and close minded"

It's funny the people who scream the loudest about "close mindedness" are usually the most close minded..

I'd wager good money that your popularity on this board likely reflects your popularity amongst your fellow Alabamian's and for some of the exact same reasons.

You’d lose that bet.

It’s funny you all act like my statement is false.

You should leave, baw. I did, but for very different reasons. I can't imagine staying in a place that you think sucks.

Hands down an awesome experience. Museums were great, lots of neighborhood parks that put anything that NOLA has to shame.

It’s funny how our experiences can differ based on where you’re coming from.

While I fully understand that crime, corruption, and expenses make NOLA a bad option to move to, I’m always drawn there and want to live there after visiting from Birmingham (Mountain Brook/Vestavia area). It’s too quiet and boring around here after a while. Especially with kids.

Between the festivals, Mardi Gras, the Saints, the cuisine, the culture, (non-“everything you love” kind), the architecture, the art, museums, City Park, Audubon Park…NOLA almost always has something to do. Something to attach your identity to.

Birmingham doesn’t have much.

yeah, better to have the excitement of a couple of weekend shootings I'm in "L.A" and love the fact that I don't always have to "carry".

New Orleans would be an interesting place to live if you are loaded. It doesn't really offer a middle class family much by way of quality of life though.

that and where you are in life. I'm like the polar opposite of you. I grew up in and around Atlanta and have lived ITP for the last 7 years until this past fall when we moved to hoover/vestavia because of our baby. There are obviously tons of things I miss about where Im' from but having to think about the little one there's no way I'd want to move back now. There's too much crime, schools too crappy, and higher COL compared to where we are now taht just didn't make it as desirable anymore. And as for "stuff" to do, the only thing I'd really do back home taht I can't/don't do now is go to a major sporting event. Golf (both real and Top), concerts, bars, restaurnats, parks, etc are all here just like they are there. Anything else we may want to do when our kid is a little older like the aquarium or something we can easily make a day trip out of.

It is false. Most people in the state of Alabama don't suck.

I’ve been here most of my life and have learned to ignore the dumbasses. It has redeeming qualities, mainly the outdoors, and I have a solid base of open minded friends and acquaintances. Living here doesn’t entirely suck, but a lot of the people here certainly do. I can’t stand that fake southern hospitality bullshite. Sure those people are nice to your face, but they’re talking shite about you as soon as you walk away.

Leaving Alabama is on our horizon once the kids finish high school. One graduates this month, then I have 3 years for my daughter to graduate.

you continue to cite people being open or close minded, can you elaborate on specifics of what you mean? I'm not antagonizing, I'm genuinely curious. Your biggest gripe seems to be that people you interact with regularly are close minded, yet you and your friends are open minded. I'd like to know more about what that specifically entails.

People talking about people behind their back is literally universal. There is nowhere on earth that doesn't take place.

I’ll put it this way. It’s no secret where I stand on social and political issues here. In real life, I live a conservative area of suburban Birmingham, and I look the part. Based on where I live and how I present myself to the world in dress and manner, most would assume I’m conservative. And when people make those assumptions about me, for some reason they feel comfortable making bigoted comments about blacks, Hispanics, homosexuals, whatever. It’s even worse when I go to more rural locales.

And I’m under no illusion that those things don’t happen in other states. People suck everywhere.

It's really Birmingham that is inexplicably hated here. It's a very solid town, Bama people aside.
We're talking about the metro area, right? The city of Birmingham is a shithole with worse demographics and a higher murder rate than New Orleans. Conversely, the southern suburbs are great and might be some of the best living in the country when factoring in cost of living.
