No thanks. I'll keep my 30-45 min commute and my 4bed 3 bath 3200sf for 300k in the RR/ CP area.

It absolutely does change it. It's comparing apples to oranges

Exactly ..... how many of these hypocrites that live in Nola and BR send their kids to public schools , we put two kids through 14 years of Catholic school because there was no way they were going to a Jefferson parish public school .....

OTOH 20 mi from Manhattan probably equates to 120 mi from downtown Austin in commute time and cost
Cost yes. Time, no. The "freeways" in Austin are bad, bad. Actually, the problem is they aren't freeways. There isn't one complete loop and some of the main arteries are street level roads with stoplights.

And I expect that both of these schools have a significant black population.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA #3 ranked high school in the nation 65% minority enrollment.
You'd be wrong. TJ is 70% Asian.
quote:
The class of 2019 includes 346 Asian, 102 white, 12 Hispanic and eight black students. A total of 2,841 teens applied, and 493 were granted admission, for an overall acceptance rate of 17 percent. Of the 1,448 Asians who applied — 51 percent of the total seeking admission — 24 percent were accepted. The acceptance rate for black students was 4 percent, while the rate for Hispanic students was 6 percent and white students was 12 percent. Among low-income students, the acceptance rate was 3 percent.
A quote I found interesting.
quote:
Bob Frye, one of the longest serving black members of the Fairfax County School Board, who voted to establish TJ as a magnet school in 1985, said that the administration should take a closer look at the school’s admissions process.
“I have no interest in lowering the standards at TJ,” said Frye, 78, who served as chairman in 1999 and 2000. “I believe even now with the proper amount of preparation and interest the numbers [of black students] could surely be higher than they are now.”

Let's face the truth here, any school with a majority black student base is most probably a shithole, sure you can find exceptions but they are just that exceptions.
We can debate the causes until the end of time but the facts remain the same.
Facts can be tricky things. I guess my objection is the fact that the OP related good schools to low black population and I was responding to a poster who who stated
quote:
The higher the minority population, the worse the school does academically
which is clearly not true.
As to the rest of my points, you would be hard pressed to find a majority black school not in an impoverished area, any you would find would also be exceptions.
Conversely, the OP later posted the area that the school would be in. in that area in New Jersey, there are 2 public schools that show up in that area, 1 is ranked 144 out 416 public HS in New Jersey 1% Black 91% White. The other is ranked 401 out 416 public HS in New Jersey 1% Black 85% White.
Really, the OP should have just left the % black out of his statement.

Again, in response to the following statement it does not
quote:
The higher the minority population, the worse the school does academically
at least not in my opinion.

Figured that out after posting, I did mention that later. I made an assumption based on where the school was located.
I found the full data by drilling down a little deeper. The entire student body there is actually 58% Asian with the freshman class being the one listed in your quote.
The Gwinnett School in GA is 23% Black which is the second largest block, the largest population block is Asian at 40%.
The quote is interesting and probably speaks to the cultural divide that seems to be growing between segments of our population.

I do agree it's a culture and poverty problem and not race but it's still safe to assume that if a school is majority black there will be a culture and poverty problem there.

if you think you can get a decent house over 2500 sq ft in a decent town 20 miles from NYC
Posted on 2/28/16 at 11:04 am to Asgard Device
Nashville is similar.
We just had to get a smaller townhome in the city for our first home so we can build some equity and afford a bigger home in 5 or so years.
There are areas of Nashville where shitty homes that need complete renovation (bars on windows, no central air/heat) that are selling for almost $300 sq/ft.

Public transportation from that area is shite. That commute is probably an hour at least depending on where you are going in NYC.

You pansies in Austin and Nashville don't even know about a real housing bubble. There are 700 square foot condos going for $500k in Seattle.

According to bankrate home costs in Seattle are more than double both Austin and Nashville
