As someone who has played sports my entire life and competed as a runner and triathlete for 10 years as an adult, I had to find another outlet after having vascular surgery on my left leg 5 years ago that put a complete halt to my racing days.

Played a little in college, but never understood the swing...couldn't lose the baseball mindset of trying to kill every shot. Got back into it about 3 years ago and it's challenging mentally & you have to have the physical skillset to hit the ball consistently.

Have more time to hit at the range for an hour or so versus getting a round in these days, but enjoy the outlet to get away from "life" for a short period of time. 44 now, but can see myself playing for a long time barring any major injuries.

Does this mean the moratorium on the b-word is temporarily suspended?

Golf is a game where you can do what a pro does for ONE shot.

I will never tackle Adrian Peterson or or hit Calvin Johnson in stride on a post route. But anybody can drop a 20 foot curling putt ONCE during a round and feel like a pro. You can get lucky and get into a drive for 300 yards like a pro. Though that number has jumped to 350. The sport is touchable, for lack of better word, for us mere mortals. If only for a shot or two per round.

I hate golf so much.

Probably because I suck at it.

But I keep playing.

I blame my shitty friends for making me keep playing this stupid/awful/infuriating sport.

It is the greatest game ever. It has been said that golf is a lot like sex -- you don't have to be good at it to enjoy it.

ETA: It was a lot more fun when I was shooting in the 70s and low 80s. 80s is the best I can do now. Need to play more.

I've been playing avidly for a relatively short period of time and for me the biggest appeal is learning to do different things with your swing and your shot. I'm probably not good enough to really be trying to shape shots, but I love doing it and it is f-ing awesome when you successfully hit a target by punching through a ten foot window or bending one 45 degrees around a tree in your line.

Most people hate playing in the wind (which I am not a fan of), but I love trying to hold shots against crosswinds or ride a breeze into a sloping green. I honestly don't think you can ever stop learning to do new things on a golf course with set of clubs.

I've been playing for over 30 years. Like life, I am always learning new things about the game. Having a wonderful teaching pro is very helpful.

Yep. I'm horrid. But first time out this year I eagled the last hole. Drove green on a par 4 and made about a 15' putt. First ever eagle.

Walking off the green I told my Dad, "those two shots are gonna cost me a lot of money this year."

I don't love anything about golf except the free alcohol and food in the tent at the Shell Houston open.

I always love the thought of it. Hanging with freinds for a few hours on a beautiful day, maybe having a few beers depending on where you are playing.

But the game itself usually ruins if for me. I suck.
