If you wore the hat because you like LSU, and you are 750+ miles from Louisiana and someone tries to politely make a connection with you, and you ignore them, you are worse than a pussy... you are a borderline psychopath/narcissist. But I am not a clinical psychologist, so I can't diagnose that.

Competition!
I'm an LSU grad, my husband graduated from UF. We walk the beach daily wearing our respective baseball caps and I always get more Geaux Tigers than he hears Go Gators, no matter what time of year. We're in Florida.
It's glorious!

You ever thought that they might be having a good time and maybe want other fans of their teams to stop by and have a drink with them. A way to meet new people. Or maybe even some friendly banter with some rivals.

One time when I was in Orange Beach and I had a LSU hat on. Went to LuLu's and while waiting for our table I went get a beer. This guy right on side of me saw my hat. He was an Auburn fan. He bought my beer and we bullshitted and talked football for awhile.
The party I was with had called me a few times to tell me our table was ready but I didn't answer just because I was planning to leave but just kept talking.
One time I had a MSU fan and his son pass me and the dad asked his son "what do we say to LSU fans?" and the little kid said "Go Dawgs!". We laughed, it was all in good fun. I can go on, but it's fun to interact with other fan bases. Why does that bother you?
One of the guys with us had a LSU shirt on and went back to the room to get something. When he was coming back down he said these 3 kids, pre-teenish, each one had a Texas hat on and one of the kids told him "LSU sucks!" and one of them threw up the hook'em horns sign. It was right after LSU baseball beat Texas.. I think in the CWS tournament and he told them "Well, we just knocked Texas out of the CWS" and they didn't say anything. When they were getting off, he said one of the kids flipped him off.
It's not like people have nothing to identify themselves as or need something to do to "fit in". Its all in good fun (except for those kids, evidently they were not joking), but what is the big deal?
