Why do sober people feel the need to broadcast it so much?

Whether you’ve always been sober or a person that formerly did drugs/drank alcohol and now have quit.

I see it mostly in the latter group.

I thought their whole thing was “just let me do my thing and don’t try to pressure me into it. It’s not a big deal that I’m sober.”

But yet they have to let everyone know about it.

I find that people in recovery vary greatly in how much they talk about it.

it's not easy and it's right to be proud of yourself for achieving it

It stops after a while. I’m now just a guy who doesn’t drink.
If they need to be proud of themselves the first year or two, so be it. Whatever keeps them sober.

I would take an inner look and see why it bothers you so bad…

It becomes and also consumes their life. It’s rather strange.

But perhaps they are afraid that if they stop broadcasting their sobriety they would slip. I’m proud of them regardless but it is weird.

The lifelong "straight edge" people are much worse than the AA / NA people. It's like they picked a personality at 12 and never generated enough testosterone to grow out of it.

Some people do, some people don’t. Just like some drinkers treat it as no big deal and others brag about what or how much they drink. I try not to let it bother me either way.

Though I usually fail when it comes to people who brag about drinking. They’re lame as frick.

How you know you're a Louisianian?

Honestly I go through periods of sobriety and do my best to hide the fact I'm not drinking.

But they don’t want it to be a thing and they don’t want it to come up in a normal setting. So, just leave it alone and do your thing.

Maybe because people know them as drinkers and ask them to go to the bar after work, if they want a beer at the golf course, etc. The response would be “I’m sober now”.

I’m clearly not talking about that

There’s no benefit to drinking alcohol

Hey dude. You are an idiot. I almost destroyed my life and family because of drinking. I brag about it all the time as a reminder to myself on how much
I fricked
Up. I’m 18 months in and never felt better. It was MY CHOICE to quit. I was not forced to. Best choice I ever made.

I never talked about it but people asked why I wasn’t drinking and I told them I quit. I’ve never once called it ‘sobriety’ though, which implies that I was once an addict. In my experience, not drinking while in groups of drinkers, especially at work events, seemed to make many people uncomfortable—probably because they had problems with the sauce.

I’ve never been a drunk or a smoker in my entire life. I’m nearly 38 years sober.

It's a life changing event. Many people aren't aware that they are strong enough to overcome addiction. They amaze themselves when they do. Perhaps, they want to inspire others?

I know a lot of homely fat chicks at closing time that would disagree with you.

Glass of high quality wine with a fine dinner is a great accompaniment. But drinking just to drink, well that never leads to anywhere good.
