I don't think you know many "country folks". You may grow your vegetables but most definitely don't.

I’m not driving out of my way to find a dollar general. Think I’ve been in a DG only one time in my life. Don’t remember being either impressed or repulsed during that one visit.

You do you.

I've never seen a worse kept store in my life. There are boxes of merchandise just stacked on the floors of the various aisles, crap out of place. It's an unbelievable dump.

my zero stop light hometown, which used to be look like a postcard from small town new england, now has a disgusting yellow dollar general in the middle of it and the family owned general store went out of business.

Went into a Dollar General once to buy beer.

Employees at slow-moving checkout make Walmart staff look highly motivated by comparison.

Pretty much every town I went into on my thru hike of the Appalachian Trail had a Dollar General. When I finished the trail, not only did I keep shopping there, but I bought stock in the company. They have kept large box stores competitive in my opinion.

People like to get all nostalgic and whatnot about mom and pops grocery stores, but smalltown mom and pops grocery stores were typically expensive as shite.

A Family Dollar took over where an IGA was for years and years in my hometown. The price of staple items is literally half of what they were at the IGA.

Don't understand why so many elitists try to demonize the Dollar General

Maybe if products were in the correct aisles instead of piled on top of each other. Maybe if they opened two cash registers. Maybe if I didn't have to hear a bell ring every time I opened the door.

"oh we are out of that but we can order it from Shreveport. It will get here next week."

that is why walmart put them out of business.

Are the prices really that much better? Even better than Walmart? I've been in a few and it always seems like they stock overstocks from other stores or off brand crap. The store are always a mess. I hate Walmart but I'd choose it over DG any day.

I had never been in a DG in my life until about 1o years ago and I needed something at the camp and stopped at a DG on my way to Walmart since they might have it. They did and since there are literally 5 DGs closer to the camp than Walmart it is really "my store" when at the camp.

Some stores are better than others, even the 5 within 6 miles of the camp vary significantly.

The prices are usually better at Walmart for the vast majority of items is amount of product you get is scrutinized. However, their sale items and their app deals make DG a winner if what you need is on sale. While I only shop there when we are at the camp so I can't really use the sales someone that shops there regularly and wants to save money can. One thing I have noticed is the receipts and the app have $5 off a $25 purchase every Saturday and occasionally $10 off $40. I have been in a DG on a Saturday when the person was buying a lot of stuff and just stopped at $25 gave the clerk a coupon, paid and started the next $25 order and so on. Someone trying to play the game correctly would get 20% off everything they bought. This is very useful for someone on a shoestring budget.

As a side note I noticed one of the DGs has fresh veggies/fruit now.

I actually really appreciate running out to a DG and saving me time and gas vs going into Walmart etc. I really wish there was one close to my house that would save me 15 minutes round trip going into where all the big grocery stores are.

This site and Americans in general like to romanticize the “good down home country folk”. Are there some that are pure hard working on the land sun up to sun down self sufficient people? Yes

But the truth is these days going into a small country town it’s mainly obese welfare living depressing people. I’ve watched it happen where we hunt

Nothing worse than having finished shopping at DG, you have to locate the lone cashier because she doubles as stocker.
