re: why do so many companies have christmas parties early?

The real answer, is likely that venues give better discounts early. Restaurants are pretty slow in early december. Christmas week people travel a lot both coming and going, and when that happens people eat out a lot.
There's not very many parties the week of Christmas because Restaurants are naturally busy.

many have christmas parties this week, yet you still have another week full of work before christmas
Because next Monday is Christmas fricking Eve and many people are going to church, Christmas parties with friends and family, and are actually traveling.

My company just booked next year’s event. They fill up quick.

As the others say, at companies that don't have a lot of turnover, employees generally start taking a good bit of PTO just after Thanksgiving so if you don't have your company's Christmas party pretty shortly after that, attendance will be low.
Frankly, from around the second week in December, people need to focus on their family and not be worried about dealing with anything work-related.

I wish they would let us spend all of our time with family and friends. I am not a fan of company Christmas parties.

I feel so strongly about it I posted twice.

Yeah, last company we had people travel on from New York and London for our Christmas party. They ain’t doing that shot on December 20th.
Current company, we have shitty long hours already. No one feels like sticking around for an extra 3 hours on Christmas Eve just for some free booze

i wasnt talking about christmas eve
im just saying a week before is fine, christmas even is on monday so do it the monday before that, but not 2 or even 3 weeks before.
as for all the posts about reserving banquet rooms, i wasnt even talking about formal catered open bar bashes, those are understandable to be early. im just talking about the regular office party christmas parties

Ours is next Saturday and I think enthusiasm will be way down since everyone will want to just be doing family stuff by that point and prepping for Christmas. This weekend is perfect.

1. Most companies can’t even have Christmas parties anymore. They’re either “end of year networking events” or “holiday” parties.
2. Depends on how big your office is and how many people are going to show up. Does your office even have room for everyone to show up? There’s probably at least 1000 people in my building who are eligible to come to our holiday party. That would obviously be a shite show and there’s no way that they want even 1/5th of those people to come. I think this year, 80 came. Because it was about a 30 minute walk away on a random Thursday.

Ours was two weeks ago. Our clients are invited, so we kick it off following the SEC championship game to make sure that the office party doesn't intrude on anyone's vacations, family, other parties, etc.
It really feels kind of like a "Thanksgiving was just last week!" party, though.

I get free beer at my company party so I don't give a shite when they have it.
It’s almost sad what I’ll put up with for free beer.
