Do they still get 18 weeks off from work each year?
Unpaid.
They are undereducated bc the pay is so low the more intelligent students are perusing other areas.
20+ years ago the school teacher was someone who was interested in the education process, was not the primary bread winner for the family and were allowed to maintain discipline in the classroom.
Many teachers today are unable to put together a lesson plan that produces success amongst the students in the classroom. And now with the "core" model education is going even further down the toilet.
The "core" model was an emergency necessity to organize a completely unorganized profession. Again, due to the fact they are underpaid and are the primary bread winners or even necessary bread winners bc of the economy. Many school districts across the U.S. were left with an undesirable pool of hiring choices.
An example of how low some areas had sunk; when I worked for an agency located on Ft Meade in southern Maryland, the Baltimore school districts were hiring one year contract teachers with a minimum requirement of a H.S. diploma or a G.E.D. Yes, high school drop outs who got their G.E.D.s were being hired (mid-late 90's) one year at a time in the Baltimore school districts.
Listen, be rational, education should be held in high regards and school teachers, from elementary to high school should be starting out at $80k and the best and brightest will fill those spots. Require them to have higher degreees than just an undergrad degree. Require them to have a masters degree to start with a specialists degree mandatory within 5 years of hire. And they will come up with better ways to educate and will not need "core" to maintain minimum requirements, and will not need specialized state overseeing to determine what is causing those schools to fail before the state takes them over.
We have enough money in tax dollars to pay for this without raising taxes.
Weed out the teachers that can't catch up. How do we weed them out? Manage by statistics. And politicians and judges and local LEO need to get on board and allow discipline back in the school system. Get rid of the principal, school board superintendents and others at the school board along with teachers who can't catch up to the new crop of students coming out of graduate school to teach starting at $80k. And who are standing in the way of positive change.
Get rid of nepotism at the school board level and at the state education department. Reward the highest achieving with promotions to the school board and state departments and more money.

Here in lies the problem. People, especially in my parish, refuse to pass a tax to pay educators at a high level. But yet complain about the teachers not having degrees or their kids having subs the whole year because the Parish can't compete with surrounding parishes when it comes to pay. They lose highly qualified teachers every year because of the pay.

same reasons nurses, gov't workers, and stewardesses complain so much.....too much free time, work that requires no thinking skills, little or no accountability for the quality of their work, and receiving higher pay than they're worth creates sense of entitlement.
stewardess is realliy a waitress, but is called a safety officer
gov't worker is really welfare recipient and called a senior administrative executive coordinator
teacher is really a baby sitter and is called an educational professional
They're all told they're something really special....and they're not
but mostly it's just too much free time for all 3 groups
note: yep, I know there are spectacular individuals in each group...too bad the 99% have to ruin it for the 1%

I would think teachers have a pretty good reason to complain, with all the children they have to deal with - either in their classroom, or in the admin's office.
Did they not know about this when they applied for the job?
