Why do romantic breakups hurt so much?

I was listening to country music this evening and it started thinking.
What is it about breakups that make them (sometimes) so incredibly painful?
I haven't experienced it it decades but pain that they brought about still lingers in my memory. Sometimes you can wonder why you cared and sometimes you can't.

That's one reason I don't like country much (I do love George Strait and I will listen from time to time, but it's not my fav).. shite gets depressing after awhile.
