Why do people redact license plate numbers when posting a car pic?

I honestly don’t know the answer to this.

More often than not, when someone posts a picture of a car for various reasons they edit to not make the license plate visible. I’ve asked why in that particular thread but never gets answered.

My thinking is a license plate is visible when they drive. What difference does it make if I you see it here?

Because people here would find out who owns the car and they would harass the crap out of them, or deliver 500 pizzas to their house

I’d guess to keep the crazies from harassing people.

But posting cell numbers, names, social media accounts is fair game? So cars are the one thing the OT considers sacred??

Along the same line, why do the block out the vehicle emblem on TV shows or in TV commercials? We all know what the vehicle is. Why pixilate the make or model?

You used to be able to look up boat registrations in GA free to the public (unlike license plates on cars) but they shut that down. So if someone posted a pic of their boat in a fishing picture, or for sale, etc, you could look up name, address, phone number, etc, right there on the DNR site.

Those were fun times.

I understand if you redact your own information. But I see threads along the lines of “which baw was at Walmart?” And they take the time to remove plate info on the lifted Ford with truck nuts.

Product placement revenue. If you don't pay the producers, they aren't going to display your logo. Whoever pays gets unredacted.

It's actually big business.

One time I saw a program about the Amish. I think the producers were being smartass because they had the amish people's faces blurred out..

..But also the horses faces. I think the producers were going out of their way, but I sorta want to hope that the amish requested it.

Anyways, this reminds me of that.

If so, please enlighten me. I didn’t see you offer an answer...

I’m talking about people who take random pics of cars and post here. Clearly not talking about the respective person posting their own info.

I understand a lonely person can spend time getting personal info from a license plate. But posting a pic of a random car? I don’t get it.
