Also, what about kids riding their bikes or chasing down a ball that rolls into the street?

Well, if they know that being hit by a car equals death, then they'll exercise caution when doing these activities and keep their head on a swivel. My dog is smart enough to stay the f%$k out of the road when not on the leash, why isn't your kid?

As for bikes, people who are speeding, but paying attention, can easily avoid them just as they do on the River Road. The problem is distracted drivers. It doesn't matter how slow those idiots are driving, if they're texting, they're not watching the road. If they're not watching the road, they can't avoid obstacles in or near the road. The problem, as usual, isn't people driving fast, but people not looking at the road at all. While there is some significant overlap, the former should not have to pay for the sins of the latter.

So, in summation: start executing people who are caught looking at their phone while the car is moving, teach your kids that moving cars=death if they're not in them and they will avoid playing in the street, and finally, trust people to engage in rational self interest. People don't want to hit kids, and kids don't want to be hit. If they're both paying attention, they won't collide. No one being hit shows that.

I drive faster than almost anyone. Always!

If your not doing 90 on the interstate, I'm passing you.

And even I drive slow through neighborhoods.

Or once again how about not being a piece of shite, because if you speed through subdivisions you are a piece of shite.

1) Petition your city for speedbumps. Sucks for you and your neighbors, but it's the only sure cure.

2) Over-educate your kids on how to approach and use the streets. We live in an age of driving apps that could list your street as a daily option or (in case of blocked or jammed streets) as a temporary option. One blocked major thoroughfare and your street can become a main detour.

3) Put one of those "Children Playing" signs in your yard and find some neighbors to do the same. You'll be the dork of the neighborhood but your kids will be a little safer.

4) Move to a cul de sac.

Yep, all kids of all ages have the ability to grasp the concept of death and injury and that it could be caused by a car in the street

You'd do better sitting out curbside in a lawn chair with a megaphone.

I don't have kids and do live on a cul de sac. I'm concerned for other people's children and my own safety when walking my dog. There are several very sharp blind curves that people take so fast they drift into the other lane.

I go the highest safe speed the conditions allow. A clear day on the interstate with no traffic, that could be 90 mph. On a curvy residential street with narrow lanes, children present, rain/poor visibility, that might be 20mph. I don't overrun my headlights, I watch the damn road, and I know how to use my breaks. When conditions change, I see that and adjust accordingly.

Driving fast does not equal being a danger to others. What is dangerous are people not watching the road at any speed. Those who are driving quickly, but paying attention, can avoid obstacles quickly. Those who are not paying attention don't avoid obstacles at all. Plus, those are the a-holes who wander off the road and hit people who are trying to stay safe by walking on the sidewalk. I lived in a residential neighborhood along a critical cut-through street and saw that crap all the damn time.

All kids that are old enough to play outside without adult supervision sure as hell do. If a 6 month old puppy can figure it out, so can a 5 year-old. If your kid isn't sharp enough to figure that out, maybe consider one of these:

If your road wouldn't be so flat they wouldn't drive so fast. Get you some potholes!!

Stop wasting your time with these morons.

An intelligent person would not do this. These idiots fighting you in this thread are drinking beers, and smoking cigs while flying through your neighborhood.

Karma, like father time, is undefeated. Sometimes she just takes awhile to even the score.

What I recommended be done on our street was to narrow the lanes. The wider the travel lanes, the more comfortable drivers are, and the faster they drive. The street I lived on had exceptionally wide lanes, so rather than change the speed limit, install stop signs, or add speed bumps, they just re-striped it to make the travel lanes slightly narrower. It worked. The average speed of drivers dropped more than 5mph despite the lanes still being more than safe for busses to pass one another.

Yep, kids never slip off where they aren't supposed to go either. Why is it so hard to not speed through a neighborhood?

Just buy stop signs and speed limit signs. Hang them wherever you see fit. Problem solved.

If that doesn't work, snipe their tires.

Please give me a logical reason to drive say ten miles over the speed limit in a subdivision. How much quicker to get to your home or if leaving your destination? Ten seconds?

I mean I guess I could see it if you were in danger of shitting your pants or a medical emergency where every second counts...

Was just talking to my wife for the first time since this morning and brought up this thread. She told me she found out a girl who works for her was walking her dog last night and someone flying around a curve in her neighborhood hit her dog on its leash and killed it. Obviously he almost hit her as well. But I am sure he was not the masterful driver that King bob is.

over a commute of 80 miles/day (2 hours round trip due to traffic, so an average speed of 40mph when accounting for traffic lights and such)
subdivision is, say 1 mile long, but going 40mph in a 30mph zone. That's going 33% over the posted speed limit, right?

So let's extrapolate maintaining that same percentage at all other points along said commute:

The time savings in that round trip, 80 mile commute from going 33% faster along the entire length of that commute would be 40mph*1.33= 53.2mph. 80 miles/43.2mph= 1.5hrs.

So, essentially, I am saving right at 30 minutes PER DAY EVERY WORK DAY. That is an increase to my non-working/commuting hours (assuming an 8 hour work day) of 3.6%, and when accounting for sleep, an increase of my non-resting, non-working/commuting hours per day of 8.3%
