Why do people allow themselves to be "cancelled"

This has always puzzled me. When a politician says something people don't like, or they find a tweet from 20 years ago that could have been racist, why to they allow the Twitter mob to dictate their actions?
Why resign over a 20 year old thing? Why not own it, apologize if necessary, then serve your full term? Really it's just people screaming as loud as they can who have no power. What gives them the right to dictate your employment or status? From my observation it is always the person being cancelled who gives them those rights by capitulating to the mob.
Have we become that weak as a society that a virtual mob, with no real teeth to enforce their demands has become strong enough to force us to give into their whims?

People not being cancelled probably happens more than we know. They’re likely smart enough not to bring more attention to it and the mob moves on. Attention spans are really short on a lot of this.
Chik fila probably handled the attempt to protest/cancel them better than any major business I’ve ever seen.

Brees was exactly the one I was thinking of. His comments were not about George Floyd and he is guaranteed the right to feel however he wants about kneeling or not kneeling, just like the twitter mob has the right to feel how they feel about it. What the mob doesn't have the right to do is to force Drew to change his feelings or massage the message to their liking because they're upset.
But it seems that's what people are doing now. Peter King did it today. For Christ sakes, all he did was reference Lord of the Flies and he was attacked until he apologized. Had he just posted, let them scream, and ignored them because it was just BS screaming, they would have been stripped of their power. Instead, he emboldened them for the next time they want to go after someone else because he caved.

It can cost you money or your position, like Drew Brees or that lady that lost her new job at U of Arizona. If you grovel you might weather the storm. If you stand your ground you're toast. I wish more people would say frick you, I quit, but it means walking away from all the sacrifices you've made to get where you are, so I understand the motivation.

Drew may not have had to grovel so much if his teammates didn't go to twitter immediately to fan the flames. It's one thing for Drew to feel the need to apologize to Twitter, it's another thing when it could cause strife in the locker room. I'm disappointed in the whole situation, but Drew did what he had to do to try to get the locker room as close to normal as quickly as possible.
It still makes me incredibly angry thinking about how Jenkins and Thomas reacted to the interview.

It’s like we are prisoners following the moral police. Afraid to express an opinion that might get you fired. So you need to rehearse every thought in your head before you say it to keep from being judged insensitive or a racist. Where are our freedoms going ?
