Best vacation we had with kids when they were young was DC. Stayed in Alexandria right across from metro stop. Didn’t move the car all week. Took the train into town and hit all the museums.

I love the beach. When I was a kid I loved it. When I was a young adult I liked to get high and listen to the waves and people watch. Now I like to play in the sand and water with my kids.
Just don’t bring so much shite. Some toys for the sand, and maybe a rubber football to throw around. Goggles and fins maybe. It’s not hard
Yep. There really isnt much better than sitting around on the beach with a drink and some music, chilling in the ocean for a few hours enjoying the waves, and just hanging out with friends/family.

I don’t know, my friend. It’s always been fun for us over the years.
Sometimes hard core like snorkeling, bringing out a big inflatable for the kids, etc, the mid day chill with a good buzz, breeze, wave sounds, bring stuff up and freshen up for dinner at house or out.
Either go out or settle into a nice evening at the house with the fam, maybe nighttime beach walk with flashlights. Fireworks are fun.
Add in anything like bocce or beach football.
ETA: and some nights some cool hangouts, nice cigar and brown liquid, and good chatter in your group.

Lake houses are underrated

Pro tip: don’t bring a wagon, wonder wheeler, etc and everyone has to carry stuff down to the beach instead of you hauling all of it.
I’ll make sure to tell my toddlers to carry their own shite. That’ll learn’em.

I don’t hate the beach but we’ve done the lake house thing a couple times now and none of my crew talk about going to the beach anymore.
Walking in and out off the boat and swimming off the dock has been the ticket.

Camping in something small enough to fit in the shady sites with great privacy at Cape San Blas/ St George is the best.
The state park at CSB got wiped out by Michael. Haven’t been since. But Gulf Breeze campground was incredible. Kids can bike and play w lots of other kids, plus a long paved bike path. nature trails, kayak fishing in the bay, scalloping, steps to the beach. No big touristy restaurants.
Indian Pass Raw Bar. Some great fresh seafood shops.
It’s what the beach should be.

Nothing says fun like paying for an overpriced condo
We get a house on the water.

having to sweat your balls off hauling a wagon full of junk down to the beach
No wagon, that's why we get a house on the water.
quote:
only to sit there for about 2-3 hours before everyone has enough sand time and goes sit by the pool.
No pool at the house. We get 5-6 hours on the beach daily.

Then you have to break all the shite down, and clean the sand off after.
Not with a house. Wash off takes 10 seconds.

Went the last two summers, will be doing lake houses from here on out. At least until both our kids are 8+
Congrats

Found a decent hotel (no amenities but the rooms were clean) on the beach side in Panama City this year for $150 / night right next door to $900 / night condos, pool right behind the room and beach access directly from the pool area.
We were a few miles away from the in town big hotels by the pier place that had all the culcha issues and it wasn’t a problem for us at all.
We were there in the middle of the week so no crowd.
Two collapsible low beach chairs, a shade tent that packs to the size of a water bottle, canvas bag with sunscreen and a couple of beach towels, small yeti with coronas and lime, and an inflatable paddle board.
Easy as frick to carry the 20 yards from the hotel beach access to a nice open spot.
Enjoyed the hell out of it and no hassle.
Will definitely do that again.
My cousin takes his family and they do the house rental thing a bit off the beach, but rent golf carts to head to the beach. That seems workable also if you have a bigger crew.

Kids under 8 won't remember much anyways. You could take them out back and spray them with a water hose and they'd have as much fun.
You need to think about what's fun for you until they turn 8 or so then go do things that they will remember and enjoy more than being sprayed with a water hose.

There are two times in life the beach is fun
1. When you're a kid, it's extremely fun and your parents do all the work
2. When you're single and in your 20's and you can get drunk and chat up hot babes.
I haul my two young kids there occasionally so they can experience #1.

You forgot the two daily thunderstorms that require repeating the process twice.
Hurry up though, we gotta get to LuLu’s before it gets packed. Spoiler alert: you’re still waiting 3 hours for mediocre food.

Sounds like you simply don’t like the beach and are going to make it as difficult as possible to appear the martyr to attain sympathy and get your way.
Like a big fricking baby.
Grow up.
