It used to be a cheap vacation for families. No idea what it's morphed in to.

Probably $400/night I'm guessing at the decent places within walking distance.

I took my kids to the beach nearly every year until they were 16. Never hauled anything. Wife would carry a bag with some towels, I’d usually have one with some drinks and snacks. We’d rent beach chairs and an umbrella someone else sets up.

I'll make an exception for places like Clearwater/St. Pete. We went there before we had kids and it was legitimately 8 steps from the elevator to beach. I can make something like work.

But the Alabama-Florida panhandle is absolutely miserable and I will not be convinced otherwise

It’s pretty meh if you live in the state of Florida and you’ve been to the beach 10,000 times before. I guess it’s fun if you’re from Idaho or something and have never been to the beach before.

I lived 3 blocks from the beach in SoCal for 2 years. I went to the actual beach twice. Ocean Drive is where I could see all the bikinis I wanted to.

Yes…. Walking to the beach from your condo is a walk. Gotta carry some shite with you too…. Tough work. Walking from condo to beach…. So tough that you hate it….

And I agree with the poster above… sitting on the sand with crystal water lapping at your feet and cold beer. Not a bad thing.

Also the people watching is top notch.

Headed to the Virgin Islands for 7 days in 2 weeks… and also headed to Colorado mountains in 5 weeks…

Rookie mistake - hauling a wagon full of junk down to the beach

Pro tip: don’t bring a wagon, wonder wheeler, etc and everyone has to carry stuff down to the beach instead of you hauling all of it.

It's a family memory thing... sorry you don't like it. Find something more your style you can convince the wife and munchkins they'd like, too.

Family vacations aren't about Mom or Dad... you know this, right?

The beach is fun. That’s why so many people go there.

Sounds like you make bad choices. Why’d you have kids if you don’t want to fool with them? You think you won’t have to haul shite for them or tend to them at a lake house? The question you should be asking is why try to travel at all with young kids?

You'll miss this when it's gone. I'm half empty nest and truly miss loading up the van for a grand adventure. It was a chore and a half in the moment, but you really do miss it when it's over.

Cherish it now, thank me later.

This is the OT, we pay people to move our kids and our crap at the beach while we check out hotties

I love the beach. When I was a kid I loved it. When I was a young adult I liked to get high and listen to the waves and people watch. Now I like to play in the sand and water with my kids.

Just don’t bring so much shite. Some toys for the sand, and maybe a rubber football to throw around. Goggles and fins maybe. It’s not hard.

I need a vacation after I go to the beach. Wife and kids make me haul everything to and from, almost no help, I have to wait in line for overpriced food that rarely lives up to expectations, sunburn, sand in my crawl…whales beached all over the place…it’s just not enjoyable, but certainly better than working or going to the dentist.

The only reason we go is we have some friends who own a condo and they give us a week free every year. I despise the daily sherpa walk taking all the shite out to the chairs only to watch them spend a couple hours a day there.

Give me a mountain vacation every day
