Why do most dogs notice another dog but ignore themselves in a mirror?

I am talking about visually notice. A dog riding by in a car will instantly notice another dog standing on the sidewalk, but that same animal can be presented with a mirror and seemingly nothing registers.

because dogs don't really exist

Because dogs don't give a shite what they look like.

Because dogs are secretly self-conscience and don't want to notice their flaws...

Probably because scent is a bigger stimulus for dogs.

When my dog was younger he used to double take by mirrors but I think they eventually figure out that it's not another dog through smell

my Pom noticed himself in the mirror all the time as a puppy. we would hear him growling from the bedroom sometimes only to discover him creeping up on his own reflection.

Smell brah. It's hard for us humans to comprehend the power of those little noses.

Because they've figured out its a reflection of themselves and they don't care. Scientific articles are always going on about apes and elephants being self aware because they recognize their reflections in a mirror. Hell, my dumb arse cat can do that!

Some dogs are just smart enough to know how mirrors work

Can they explain why mirrors reverse left/right but not up/down? Can they?!
