I have always wondered why older men stand up at a dinner table when a lady gets up from the table.

It's an old school show of respect in the south. My uncle still does it every time my aunt comes or goes from a table. Haven't seen anyone under the age of 60 ever do it.

To show that we are dominant, of course.

Most manners started with a very pragmatic reason.

Like no elbows on the table because they were dirty, etc.

To show and remind them that they're not taller or above you in any way.

I knew it was manners. My dad does it every time any lady gets up from the table. I was curious.

This. And possibly a better view of her caboose if it's worth looking at.

There are tons of things considered good manners that make no sense at all to me.

To prove we weren't jerking off under the table.

Great answers. My dad gets up when a lady leaves and returns to the table. Most people I've seen do it don't stand all the way up just kind of rise and stick there butt up and then sit back down. Just seems weird.
